Historia
“This country wasn’t built on good—only fought for with good intentions.” Jack’s dying mother told him, “Run and never look back.” He spent his life amassing wealth, but after losing his family, he has no one to share it with. Alone with his demons and a backpack, he heads to South America, where people with nothing teach him what matters. After thrashing his dog-abusing boss, Hunter learns of his father’s death in a mysterious fire. Biker buddies Nugget and Itch ride with him from North Carolina to California.

Historia
Welcome to The Egg, an off-campus geodesic dome where David Fuffman and his crew of alienated Princeton students train for what might be the end of days: America is in a perpetual state of war, climate disasters create a global state of emergency, and scientists believe time itself may be collapsing. Funded by the charismatic Mathias Blue and fueled by performance enhancers and psychedelic drugs, a student revolution incubates at The Egg, inspired by the superheroes that dominate American culture. The arrival of Haley Roth - an impassioned heroine with a dark secret - propels David and Mathias to expand their movement across college campuses nationwide.

Not your typical dystopian fiction!
Revisado: 08-04-22
If you'd like something other than bedraggled people traveling across a wasteland, occasionally battling their fellow humans, this book is for you!
The premise and narrative isn't anything I have encountered in the dozens of apocalyptic books I've read. I often wondered, how the heck did he come up with that!

Get your Stereotype BINGO card ready!
Revisado: 07-30-22
This book begins with one of the least likely events to trigger an apocalypse there is. But hey! This is fiction and a coordinated Syrian immigrant terrorist attack on the United States is about as probable as zombies. From there the writer's main theme continues to be the unlikely but often talked about scenarios on Fox News or portrayals of people that are just plain untrue stereotypes. It seems to have been written to appeal to his Trump admiring friends and neighbors in rural VA. The pull "yourself up by your boots" trope is pervasive. The only brown people in this book were bad guys. Setting all that aside I really enjoyed the adventures of Grace and the storyline.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

BEWARE OF STORIES OF HORRIBLE ABUSE
Revisado: 04-05-22
For abuse survivors, this book may be harmful.
I do hope that a revised addition that doesn't include graphic details will be published so that the information is more accessible to them.
I also hope that every person who is a politician, teacher, counselor, police officer, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, and social worker will read this book. This action would change the world.

Historia
Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man - a fellow slave - seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own.

Historia
War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

great story but repetitive
Revisado: 12-09-21
This story was filled with many wonderful twists and turns but unfortunately the author seemed to think it would add to the story to repeatedly say "I didn't know what would happen next" or "If only I knew then what I know now" or "That didn't stop me because of what happened later." I found myself rolling my eyes every time the author decided to insert this unnecessary "foreboding" language.
