Historia
In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs - now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his La-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie - now he goes by Vern.

Dry, wet, funny, touching, scorching...this book made me laugh aloud and pause it every time my kid got into the car. This is an adult book by a children's author, there are puerile jokes, pop culture jokes, jokes on jazz, and high-lit jokes. I was so impressed that I just purchased every adult book this man has written. I might buy all the kid books. I'd be proud for my child to grow up on this well-written, well-performed content. This book was fire.

Historia
In the 1990s, heavy metal band Durt Wurk was poised for breakout success - but then lead singer Terry Hunt embarked on a solo career and rocketed to stardom as Koffin, leaving his fellow bandmates to rot in obscurity. Two decades later, former guitarist Kris Pulaski works as the night manager of a Best Western - she's tired, broke, and unhappy. Everything changes when a shocking act of violence turns her life upside down, and she begins to suspect that Terry sabotaged more than just the band.

As a fan of metal, this book nailed the culture. Fantastic book and narration. Beautiful nod to the music, samples, and influences. Necessary critique of the infiltration of popularized/washed metal. This was a gritty, meaty, and substantial story. Thank you, Grady, now we're on a first name basis.

Narrator is fab, main character is an idiot for 3 too many chapters.
Revisado: 03-11-24
Gah. Overall, I think Sariah Wilson writes sweet stories. They're great when life is a little too stressful or I need a break from sci-fi/fantasy. However, most of her books fall prey to heroines who are rather emotionally stunted for about 3-4 too many chapters. We get it. Personal growth takes time. But snogging a dude (who is usually insanely patient) while dithering about EVERYTHING or making terrible, illogical choices in every single book...I end up skipping entire chapters and not losing the thread of the story. It's a bummer. Still a nice listen, but overall, just an OK book.

Lucas Rurik is no stranger to navigating the tricky territory between humans and those touched by the rift. After all, as the last surviving member of the Raven Guild, protecting the peace is his job. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Revisado: 10-21-23
Every series, every time. This trilogy took a bit more work to really get into, but so worth it by the midpoint of the 2nd book. A mark of a great audiobook is the random lunatic smile or bray of laughter. Happened in a restaurant on my lunch break when I was dining alone. Worth it.

Howled with laughter
Revisado: 09-01-23
My friend group is filled with fantasy nerds. Our humor runs the the gamut from super clean to filthy (me) and folks who want the extended throbby cocky scenes and those who generally skip 3 pages as soon as something starts pulsating (shockingly, me...bc once you've read 30+ LK Hamilton...all throbby cocky pales).
What's the point you ask? I was the first to crack this audible but it's made the way through 6 of us--a super diverse set of listeners/readers.
We have texted, called, zoomed, and voicemailed more for this single book than we have for entire series. This book bites, in all the best ways. Read it with a friend.

Another binged series
Revisado: 08-09-23
Between the world building, the rich characters, and the pacing, this is the second series of McHugh's that's kept me up at night. His mixing of folklore (Nordic, Greek, Native American, and more!) and fantasy is seamless. These are intelligent and dynamic Audibles. And the narration, again, top-notch.

Revisado: 06-10-23
After coming off a mediocre series, I needed something to shock my system--something to reset my standards. This book absolutely set me back on the path of high quality authors and narrators. I'll be looking for Mr. Bockoven's other work.

What the psychoanalysis?
Revisado: 06-06-23
If you want to save a credit, read the spoilers in the last sentences of my review. Otherwise, STOP READING AT TL;DR.
JFC. I get it. Poly life is complex. Cool. Cool. It's been happening for a while, Anita. If the audience is a nail and poly metaphor is the table, then we've taken quite a pounding at this point. Where is the rest of the story? How have I been listening to this for....shoot...how long was this story? Save the credit, read a synopsis.
TL;DR Richard's back, he's bi, and he's done therapy; Asher is a diva and fed by Kane's manipulative, narcissistic aggression--one or both are prob gonna die. Everyone talks too much. There's a super old, big bad that will eventually die. Triumvirate(s) happen.

Not quite the start to her relaxing holiday she’d been hoping for.

Dang it. I thought we were making progress with book 5 and book 6, rather than giving me some character growth, just sat there like a croc in a swamp. Ugh. I should have done more chores while listening to this series. I feel doubly unproductive.

Isobel Avery’s first six months as an undercover poison taster haven’t exactly been easy. But this week will be worse. Two people with nothing in common are found dead. Apparently poisoned by an artificial intelligence security system. Now Izzy needs to find out whether robots are taking over the world or if there's a geeky murderer on the loose. Oh, and she also needs to juggle the demands of her personal life - playing along with Etta's latest deception, rehoming a mysteriously acquired stray dog, cheering up her mopey housemate, and helping Harper cut ties with her boyfriend.

It's good and what it's meant to be.
Revisado: 05-30-23
OK, the series is cute. And while it's not the cutest. It's got continuity, likable characters, and decent plot. I try not to be awful about expecting more from books then they are meant to be but I came into the series with my own expectations based on her other writings. My fault. With that said, I like writings under her pen name better but will finish this series. It was not a poorly spent 40 hours with this group of characters, but not a series I'd return to for a visit as old friends.
