The Best Parenting Book I've Ever Read
Revisado: 11-19-21
I have read a million parenting books, but this is hands down the best. It does not prescribe a parenting method, but helps the reader understand what stress triggers and consequent reactions are in both your children and yourself on a neurological level. I am grateful to this author for this book and plan to listen to it again. It should be required reading, not just for all parents, but for all humans.

Historia
From the Bible to Benjamin Franklin, from the cuneiform tablets of the ancient Sumerians to the dinner tables of modern bistros, wines have always been a part of civilization, culture, and history. Every country in the world has a special relationship with wine and takes a unique approach to the making, serving, and enjoying of it. Wine is an expression of the hopes, dreams, and cultures of the people who make it, so what better way to learn about the countries of the world than by learning about their wines?

Wonderful contextualizing of wine history
Revisado: 04-25-21
I work in the wine industry, and loved this book. I love the way the author wove in world history with wine history for a real understanding of why things evolved the way they did. Loved his conversational reading style too. A great overview of wine history that is not at all dry!

Historia
There are nearly 1,400 known varieties of wine grapes in the world - from altesse to zierfandler - but 80 percent of the wine we drink is made from only 20 grapes. In Godforsaken Grapes, Jason Wilson looks at how that came to be and embarks on a journey to discover what we miss. While hunting down obscure and underappreciated wines, he looks at why these wines fell out of favor (or never gained it in the first place), what it means to be obscure, and how geopolitics, economics, and fashion have changed what we drink.

An entertaining and informative listen
Revisado: 12-27-18
I'm in the wine business and I love books about wine, but a lot of times they are just not made for listening. They can be super dry--much better to read on the page. Godforsaken Grapes is definitely the exception to that. The narrator is wonderful, text is entertaining, and it is highly listenable. Learned a lot, but also just enjoyed the personal stories and the humorous flow of the book. Highly recommend!

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

UGH
Revisado: 11-18-17
One-dimensional, cliched characters. Lousy narration. Sloppy storytelling. It moves from tight first-person to third-person omniscient throughout. Was there an editor before this book was published? The three narrators are absolutely horrid at doing other people's voices. When they have to get into the voice of another character, it sounds painful. The detective is narrated like a hardboiled P.I. from the 1920s. Really? I gave it two stars (instead of one) because it's a fluffy thriller and the plot moves relatively well.

Historia
On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of Black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes. But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.

Painfully tedious
Revisado: 08-30-16
Over reported. The author goes into all the most minute details about every single character's background. There's no over-arching point of view, it just feels like you are awash in information with no end goal. I still have 5 hours to go, but I don't think I'll finish it. The narration is pretty flat too.

Boring, annoying narration
Revisado: 01-22-13
The author spent the first several hours trying to sell me on why I should buy this book (I already had), why I should not do an MBA program (I have no intention of doing one), and what he was going to tell me in the pages ahead (get to it!). I wanted to find out relevant information to starting a new business, but I felt that the topics were covered in a very cursory way. It's probably too much information for just one book. I also felt that the pronunciation/narration was annoying and couldn't make it through the whole book.

Historia
It's the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

Excellent Story and Narration
Revisado: 06-14-12
I couldn't stop listening to this. David Pittu's narration was amazing--subtle and nuanced. The story follows several characters as they navigate the world of ideas in college and after graduation in the early 1980s. Well-drawn characters, layered story. Definitely worth listening to.
