Enjoyed Every Minute
Revisado: 09-17-22
I enjoyed every minute listening to the performance of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. The talented voices brought the characters to life and their intertwined stories and struggles were revealed in such a way that, every time I had to push stop, I couldn't wait to hear more. And so, I became one of those annoying people wearing one earbud almost everywhere I went!

Knew Id like it - ended up loving it!
Revisado: 05-22-22
For years, I've been listening to Julia Whelan's talented voice as she performs other people's novels. I've enjoyed every minute. Now, I've had the distinct pleasure of her voice AND her words. I adore her even more!
My Oxford Year is wonderfully written - with wit, heart, humor and depth that carried me through Ella's planned time in England and the unplanned path it took.
I especially loved Julia's fully developed characters: their personalities, their conversations, their revelations. I loved the quoted works opening each chapter. I loved being able to trust an author so much that I didn't need to know a single thing about a book on my must-read list, and walking away at the end fully satisfied.
Thank you Julia - I can't wait to hear your next novel!

Historia
In New York City everybody needs a side hustle, and perfumer Vic Fowler has developed a delicate art that has proved to be very lucrative: creating bespoke scents that evoke immersive memories - memories that, for Vic’s clients, are worth killing for. But the city is expensive, and these days even artisanal murder doesn’t pay the bills. When Joseph Eisner, a former client with deep pockets, offers Vic an opportunity to expand the enterprise, the money is too good to turn down. But the job is too intricate - and too dangerous - to attempt alone.

Most Unusual
Revisado: 04-10-22
When you don't like the main character, and never do - even as the story continues - it's difficult to actually like a book, and even harder to recommend it And yet, I liked this story. The more I listened, the more I couldn't stop. And I will recommend it, with some reservation. It's written in a beautifully crafted and unique voice - like none I've never heard before.
A NYC perfumist who kills people to acquire scents is the foundation for Vic Fowler's monologue - the story he directly tells to you. If you're willing to take in his story, losing characters along the way, then by all means dive into it, and enjoy the unravelling ride.
The reader is brilliant - relaying with accurate self-absorption & cold-hearted feeling - Vic's myopic perspectives on life, love, and the challenges he can only solve through murder.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Engaging, Haunting, Satisfying Story
Revisado: 02-13-22
If you're looking for a great listen, I can highly recommend Once Upon A River by Diane Setterfield, and read by Juliet Stevenson.
Set in Victorian England, beginning and ending on a mystical solstice night, Setterfield skillfully weaves a tale, winding its way back & forth through time and between the many unique characters, including the river.
The story starts with a hulk of a man, injured & soaking wet, entering the local pub, with a drowned girl in his arms. From there, we meet Margot (the bar owner), Rita (the ahead-of-her-time midwife) and misters Vaughn & Armstrong (well-intentioned wealthy gentlemen) along with the rest of the town folk who uncover secrets and stories that take a year, exactly, to unfold.
With fortune-telling pigs, missing children & children abandoned, ransom notes & vast somes of money, photographic evidence, ghostly appearances, fortunes to be made & lost, medical experiments, run-aways, miracles, the playing out of love in many forms, a ferry to the world of the dead, and most importantly - the power of story, Once Upon A River was an engaging, entertaining, and unique tale from the first line to the last.
After finishing chapter one, I was saddened to realize I only had 16 hours left to enjoy! And at its end, I had a strong desire to simply start over... just to relish being its grasp longer.
Juliet Stevenson's voices and expressions were beautifully performed and each character easily recognizable.

Historia
Paris, 1878: Following the death of their father from overwork, the three van Goethem sisters find their lives upended. Without their father’s wages, and with what little their mother earns as a laundress disappearing down the absinthe bottle, eviction from their single boarding room seems imminent. With few options for work available for a girl, bookish 14-year-old Marie and her younger sister Charlotte are dispatched to the Paris Opera, where for a scant seven francs a week, the girls will be trained to enter its famous ballet. Their older sister, stubborn and insolent 17-year-old Antoinette, finds herself launched into the orbit of Émile Zola....

Touching, Informative
Revisado: 12-29-21
A time period of which I knew very little, this tale of two Paris sisters in the 1870s was informative & touching. Antoinette & Marie's ever-present poverty mixed with opportunities for dance, work & love pull at your heart while the details & truths from historical murderers & their trials, Zola's popular naturalism theory (thieves & murderers are born, not made) and even the famous Degas' dancing girl paintings & statues generate disbelief of history's harsh realities. Read aloud by three talented artists, this well-researched & cleverly-connected story was an addictive listen and now I want to study more closely Degas' art and delve into the reform movements of the late 19th century.

Worthwhile & Touching
Revisado: 11-12-21
I love when a novel transports you to a time & place full of people you never knew, and now love. And this beautifully told story bounced back & forth between 1985 & 2015, so that you knew & yet didn't know how it would end. It was a slow and somewhat confusing start, but once the characters were truly established, I couldn't stop listening. I found the story touching, intriguing, funny, and worthwhile. I will carry the stories of Yale, Fiona, & Nora with details & affection, as if we were friends.

"Gender is a shell game..."
Revisado: 10-02-21
If you're intrigued when gender, history, religion, politics, family dynamics, and cataclysmic events cross & double-cross... I think you'll enjoy this fictional (and at the same time totally believable AND unbelievable) story. I've just finished (and as with so many great stories) I want to turn back to page 1 and, knowing what I now know, start all over again....
The story is strongly supported by the narrator's ability to portray and voice multiple lead characters, spanning men & women from multiple countries. I was entrenched in these characters' lives every day for the last month as I walled the dog, washed dishes, drove to work... I'm not sure I would've enjoyed reading this book as much as loved listening to it.

The summer of 1937 will be a turning point for 14-year-old Houston “Huck” Finn. When he and a friend find a dead body in a local creek, a rare Lindbergh flight watch on its wrist, it seems like a sign. Huck is building his own airplane, a fact he has concealed from his mother. That summer also marks the arrival of his cousin Annelise, sent to live with the family under mysterious circumstances. As it turns out, she has had flying lessons - another sign.

Characters you'll love
Revisado: 04-26-21
Malcomb Brooks has penned a gripping story with full characters you'll love every step of the way throughout his summer story set in a time long gone. I especially loved the developed relationships, intricate backstories, and the self-reflections of each character. Listening as read by Julia Whelan makes it feel like a tall tale spun by a grandpatent about the good old days!
