Historia
Sarai was a child of ten years, wise for her age but not yet a woman, when she first met Abram. He appeared before her in her father's house, filthy from the desert, tired and thirsty. But as the dirt of travel was washed from his body, the sight of him filled her heart. And when Abram promises Sarai to return in ten years to take her for his wife, her fate was sealed. Abram kept his promise, and Sarai kept hers. They were wed, and so joined the royal house of Ur with the high priesthood of the Hebrews. So began a lifetime of great joy together,

Great story, but this is my last OSC novel
Revisado: 05-28-18
Initially, I was very excited about this book. I enjoy many of Orson Scott Card's novels, and his writing didn't disappoint here.
The reason I decided to write a review was the departures from Scripture. Yes, I know that artists - authors included - take liberties to make a story more dramatic. I suppose what I most took umbrage at was Card's afterword, where he quite unashamedly said that he doesn't believe the Bible to be without error. That stories don't make sense. Well, Mr. Card, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness;" and the Bible also gives clear warning to anyone who should remove "one jot or tittle." So, if someone changed the Bible from fact to fiction at some point - I do believe God would have caused that error to be struck from history. Otherwise, if the Novie is wrong in some areas, it should not be followed at all. I do believe the Bible to be without error.
Knowing that Mr. Card believes the Bible to have errors in it, and that he also believes the stories written therein to be mainly embellishments or perhaps campfire ghost stories, has decided this reader against purchasing any more Orson Scott Card novels, especially those that take their basis from supposed error-strewn Scripture.

Historia
Purple. The foundation of an influential trade in a Roman world dominated by men. One woman rises up to take the reins of success in an incredible journey of courage, grit, and friendship. And along the way, she changes the world. But before she was Lydia, the seller of purple, she was simply a merchant's daughter who loved three things: her father, her ancestral home, and making dye. Then unbearable betrayal robs her of nearly everything.

Transported Back to Ancient Thyatira
Revisado: 04-15-18
I have grown to love these Biblical times books by author Tessa Afshar. Though mostly fictional, they are based on real people in the Bible. Many times, those people have only a few words or verses to tell us about them. Ms. Afshar takes those verses and expands them to help illuminate the life of these people that are integral, even if only in a small way, to the Christian faith.
In this particular book, we meet Lydia as a young lady. Her father, a dye master and a widower, runs a successful business - but is not so successful at the bookkeeping side of it. Help comes after a near-tragedy - but is it the help Lydia's family needs? Or will this particular golden goose turn to brass? And what happens that Lydia is no longer in Thyatira when she meets Paul?
Reading novels such as these - or rather, listening to them - transforms history from dry and difficult to understand, to very much alive and relatable to life today. Ms. Rendah Heywood provides a believable voice for Lydia, and helps to bring her character not just to life, but makes it seem as though you are at Lydia's own feet, listening to her tell her story. She portrays emotion and drama with skill.
Ms. Afshar has once again done a fantastic job removing the barriers of time, and Ms. Heywood a marvelous job of portraying the story. When listening to this book, I found myself with baited breath more than once. I will definitely listen to this book again and again, and would absolutely recommend it.
