Historia
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.

The story AND the narrator‼️❤️
Revisado: 09-27-24
The story and characters are the most engaging I’ve encountered in *years*. The characters are rich, varied, and nuanced. Taffy Brodesser-Akner is now on my short list of favorite authors.
On top of that, Edoardo Ballerini, the narrator, is just ______ (fill in the blank) with every superlative. He voices male and female characters equally well, with varied regional accents that always sound believable, never exaggerated nor stereotypical. Whatever it takes to be an EXCELLENT narrator, Ballerini has got IT. I will now look for books he has narrated because he brought this one to life.
This audiobook is WELL WORTH the credit. I will even listen to it again.

Revisado: 12-08-21
I chose this rating because there is potential for me to learn from Jewel’s experiences. Her life story shows phenomenal talent as a poet, singer, and songwriter - none of which I am nor do I need to be in order to fully enjoy as well as benefit from her life lessons. Throughout her life, she had multiple points at which she needed to pick up the pieces and put them back together. The results reflected in her narrative are beauty, grace, integrity, dignity, and strength. Never believe that someone has to have lived a long life in order to write about themselves. Besides the fact that each person brings their own self to the table, sometimes there is a phenomenon of a person who has seen and done so much more than you might think, if you’re only judging the surface.

Her story is already naturally intriguing and she could have let that be enough but she did the work of talking to others and including their stories as well. I listened straight through. Very interesting.

Historia
In her harrowing, defiant, and unforgettable memoir, Sarah Ramey recounts the decade-long saga of how a seemingly minor illness in her senior year of college turned into a prolonged and elusive condition that destroyed her health but that doctors couldn't diagnose or treat. Worse, as they failed to cure her, they hinted that her devastating symptoms were psychological. The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness is a memoir with a mission: to help the millions of (mostly) women who suffer from unnamed or misunderstood conditions.

💯 a valuable use of your money AND time. 💯
Revisado: 06-14-20
This story was not at all "too long" and the so-called "agenda" (referenced by the extremely short and negative review below) is simply a call to action for moving quickly to improve public health. Angry? Read the story and see if you blame her for that and even then, she's not angry the whole time. That said, what's wrong with being angry unless you have an agenda yourself that women should pretend to be OK when they have been victimized by a surgeon's incompetent communication with the referring doctor? The reviewer below himself has an agenda which, at best, is to listen quickly and move on and, at worst, he has no empathy or compassion for what Sarah Ramey went through. No word in this book was wasted. I felt compelled to listen to all of it within a day of purchase and it is by far one of the most important books of this era, particularly now that we're all living through COVID-19, and people with auto-immune diseases are being devastated by this disease.
This story is valuable on multiple levels. For me, personal. For my daughter who wants to be a doctor and a mom: personal and professional. It's for anyone who cares about the quality of life in our country. It's also a compelling medical mystery and an intense memoir of a young woman's decade through a mystery illness that could have been easily solved had her doctors simply listened to her with a simple request. The misogyny and blatant indifference to her suffering is astounding and painful - and this period is 2004-2014.
Memoir and call to action, gripping and harrowing, leavened by a warm humanity, compassion, empathy, intelligence, and wit. Yes, there are some f-bombs, and yes, there is some anger but it is righteous and not melodramatic nor overdone.
I could not stop listening. It's by turns a medical mystery, and then a memoir of "the healing journey" that is never saccharine or manipulative but authentic and real. I'm going to insist that my daughter, pre-med and a victim of modern life's expediencies and sacrifices, listen to this work. I hope she will take it to heart because I know it will lead her to a better quality of life especially as one who wants to pursue the challenging road of medical school as well as have children. She will be a better doctor and mother after reading this.
The author reads the first and last chapters so the narrator for the main body is different but a near approximation of the author's voice and she is EXCELLENT. Chapters 16 and 17 as well as another chapter describe especially harrowing events from the author's first person POV but the narrator handled the job with such care and finesse. She also read other parts more spiritedly when it was appropriate. Absolutely well-done. It must have been extremely difficult for her to read as it was for me to listen to but I am SO glad I did. SO not a waste of time as per that negative reviewer whose extremely abbreviated review offered no substance.
This book is not only for women - it will also speak to highly sensitive people and orchid children. Anyone who has come of age in our country in the last fifty years has been exposed to the health stressors described by the author - male or female, but it's a majority of women who suffer with "mysterious illnesses" often for the discouraging reason that many medical doctors still do not listen to women. If they can't solve it immediately, they refer them on to another or prescribe an antidepressant. I'm not against antidepressants at all, btw, nor is the author.
This is a hugely important book and I hope it's one of many other developments toward Improved health of American people. God bless Sarah Ramey for "embracing Hades" and for returning to share the lessons with us. God bless us all. The nature of modern life is shortening our lives and Sarah's story will be a dark journey but I came away from it with chills at the final sentence and a boosted sense of morale to be, like a recent hero, "the one who lives."

The Psychopath Test is a fascinating journey through the minds of madness. Jon Ronson's exploration of a potential hoax being played on the world's top neurologists takes him, unexpectedly, into the heart of the madness industry. An influential psychologist who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are, in fact, psychopaths teaches Ronson how to spot these high-flying individuals by looking out for little telltale verbal and nonverbal clues.

Top rate gonzo journalism. Know that Ronson was not attempting a scholarly treatise on the subject of psychopathy. He did what he set out to do and what he’s known for doing so well. If you like Tom Wolfe, you will like Ronson. I loved it.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

I recommend this book to those who appreciate a well-laid case. Gladwell reminds me of Paul Harvey whose trademark was building up to the ultimate point. Malcolm Gladwell is a treasure to humankind with his particular blend of reason and passion. I don’t feel manipulated - simply respected and presented with logic and reason.

Historia
From her creation of the “Approval Matrix” in New York magazine in 2004 to her Pulitzer Prize–winning columns for The New Yorker, Emily Nussbaum has argued for a new way of looking at TV. In this collection, including two never-before-published essays, Nussbaum writes about her passion for television, beginning with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the show that set her on a fresh intellectual path. She explores the rise of the female screw-up, how fans warp the shows they love, the messy power of sexual violence on TV, and the year that jokes helped elect a reality-television president.

I’ve had the audiobook literally two days, and I’ve now listened to almost all of it. I absolutely see myself listening to it again, especially as I choose what shows to watch or to watch again through her critic’s eye. Some shows she loves - Girls, for example. I had a hard time getting beyond one episode for some reason; now that I’ve listened to Emily, I have a better idea why and I’m willing to go back. Her pieces on Joan Rivers and the Marvelous Mrs Maisel were especially insightful. Listen to this book for insight into American culture, politics, art, gender, and yes, even just for entertainment. It’s a great guide to TV - some shows better than others - that is an instant classic.

While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

Revisado: 11-18-18
I just finished listening and my only regret is that it wasn’t longer. It is definitely top of my short list of best audiobooks. Jon Benjamin is Bob of Bob’s Burgers and Archer of Archer. I am already preconditioned to expecting real laughs from him after enjoying his work in these and other comedic animations and he delivered yet again. An example of how an audiobook is the best medium for someone like Jon whose voice has made his career. Not only the voice but the quality of his anecdotes. This was a credit well worth it because I laughed out loud multiple times, and I would and will listen again. Who would enjoy this? Anyone who enjoys self-deprecating comedy reflecting on experiences that were humbling at the time. Chapter 21 was especially good - the humble and hilarious recounting of an explosively painful bout of colitis in a rental car, in shorts, delivered in agony to a valet at the resort where he was to talk on a panel about Archer within six hours. Pure and priceless delight all the way through the recording. Love you Jon!!

Do the lessons passed down to us by history, lessons whose origins may lie hundreds, even thousands of years in the past, still have value for us today? Is Santayana's oft-repeated saying, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," merely a way to offer lip service to history as a teacher-or can we indeed learn from it? And if we can, what is it that we should be learning?

Revisado: 05-29-18
The content of this lecture series is fascinating and relevant. I wish Dr Fears were alive to see the situation we’re in today in 2018. He wouldn’t be surprised and maybe he would be a voice of reason among conservatives, which I believe he is, though he maintains balance and objectivity. If he were alive and remained intellectually honest to his own scholarship, I believe he would be firmly NeverTrump. Every citizen should listen to this series.

Why do "Great Books" continue to speak to us hundreds and even thousands of years after they were written? Can they deepen our self-knowledge and wisdom? Are our lives changed in any meaningful way by the experience of reading them?Tackle these questions and more in these 36 engaging lectures. Beginning with his definition of a Great Book as one that possesses a great theme of enduring importance, noble language that "elevates the soul and ennobles the mind," and a universality that enables it to "speak across the ages," Professor Fears examines a body of work that offers extraordinary wisdom to those willing to receive it.

Yes. Worthy purchase. Relistenable.
Revisado: 11-23-17
I listened to this lecture series in its entirety and was immediately ready to use my next credit on another lecture series by him (he referenced his “Famous Greeks” which made me want to listen; reading the summary of the “Famous Romans” sounds even better and very topically relevant to today’s politics) before reading reviews of another lecture series by Dr Fears that faulted him for bias of a flag-waving and Christian slant. I did a little searching of his name after seeing these reviews and I was surprised to see that he appeared to be politically conservative, often guesting on a conservative talk radio program in Oklahoma. In this case, the nature of the lecture is the great books - not an overview or interpretation of history -so that may be the difference. I’m most definitely NOT conservative and I thoroughly enjoyed his style and the quality of his content.
I think Dr Fears delivers this lecture series expertly. I truly enjoyed his retellings of each story; he made them come alive and palatable. They’ve always seemed dry to me, and it takes an excellent instructor to entice me in to classic literature and mythology. He exceeded my expectations. I would definitely purchase another lecture series by him and I’m sorry to learn that he passed away five years ago.
