Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Martha Ballard’s (fictionalized) Story
Revisado: 02-03-24
I really enjoyed this historical fiction novel that takes place during the second half of the 1700s in what used to be now the state of Maine. The main character is a midwife. Due to this profession she interacts with many people in the town. A body is discovered in the frozen river. Was it an accident or murder? There are legal proceedings, or what passed as such for the time period. This book is based on the life of Martha Ballard but highly fictional in parts.

Susan Cain’s work has always resonated with me. This Audible original is no exception. I will be relistening and jotting down some notes. If you enjoyed Quiet or Bittersweet, if you like to dive into the deep end, and/or if you feel the oneness of the universe this is for you.

Liked it, didn’t love it
Revisado: 12-25-23
The story was fine but Iat the beginning I was frustrated with the main character. She’s 35 but I had to keep reminding myself of that fact because she acted much younger, half her age.

The Lost Bookshop
Revisado: 11-21-23
This book surprised me with the magical realism aspect. I went into it blind, and did not know that would be an aspect of this book. However, the story was enjoyable and imaginative,. It did catch my interest. However, there were times when I felt that things parts were missing or unexplained. Plus the ending was not fully wrapped up.

Love (this) Story
Revisado: 06-03-23
I wasn’t immediately captivated but as the story progressed I grew to love it. This book is heartwarming and full of love but it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Very serious issues are dealt with and we see the characters respond and grow. I loved this book and want to give Albert a big hug.

Absolutely Love This Book
Revisado: 04-24-23
This is my favorite kind of book. It’s a story that seems simple at its core but really has many threads that connect, cross, and weave around each other to create a sum greater than its parts. Despite the book’s slim 222 pages it contains a huge helping of heart.
This may be my selection for the next time I run my monthly book club’s discussion. Undoubtedly, it will land amongst my top reads of the year.
I have quite a few favorite passages. I’ll share a couple here.
“The things he’s saying are hard for her to grasp - come home, we love you, don’t worry - like scattered beads from a necklace that has snapped. Bright gems rolling every which way. She is on her hands and knees on the floor, gathering them up.”
“His gratitude is so wide and deep that it feels, instead, like shame.” It’s a gratitude that opens him up to hurt, makes him fearful, vulnerable.”
“…it was like everything had no beginning, and no end. Like we were light-years away, and here, all at the same time.”

By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. C-PTSD memoir
Revisado: 03-19-22
I found this book to be a fabulous memoir, and journalistic piece, about trauma and complex PTSD. Parts of it are difficult to read as Foo experienced a high level of abuse growing up. Her trials and her resilience offer many lessons to those recovering from trauma.
