Historia
A fresh account of some of history's greatest warriors. The Vikings had an extraordinary and far-reaching historical impact. From the eighth to the 11th centuries, they ranged across Europe - raiding, exploring, and colonizing - and their presence was felt as far away as Russia and Byzantium. They are most famous as warriors, yet perhaps their talent for warfare is too little understood.

Deadly . . . As in Dull

Would you try another book from Philip Line and/or Robert Fass?
You mean that Mr. Line wrote another book? This isn't just his Master's Thesis?
What was most disappointing about Philip Line’s story?
This is just an exhaustive summary of the archaeology and historical records that tell us what kind of axes they used, how they lined up for battle, etc. There is no "story"

Historia
The Dead Hand is the suspense-filled story of the people who sought to brake the speeding locomotive of the arms race, then rushed to secure the nuclear and biological weapons left behind by the collapse of the Soviet Union—a dangerous legacy that haunts us even today. The Cold War was an epoch of massive overkill.

Where does The Dead Hand rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best audiobooks I own. It is meticulously researched and detailed, yet totally absorbing. Brings to light facts I was totally unaware of (the Soviet's biological weapons program) or that I may have known but forgotten (the kidnapping of Gorbachev in a failed coup attempt).
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dead Hand?
The account of Reagan's meetings with Gorbachev and how Reagan'/s honest and true belief in Star Wars, and vision of a world without nuclear weapons stood in the way of arms reduction at a critical moment.

Historia
For the people of the ancient Mediterranean and beyond, the city of Rome had been a symbol of power for centuries, and entering the early 5th century AD, the Eternal City hadn't been taken by an enemy force since the Gauls had done it about 800 years ago, an unheard of period of tranquility in a world wracked with almost constant warfare. Thus when the Visigoths, who the Romans considered uncultured and inferior, took the city of Rome and sacked it in 410, the world was stunned.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The Sack of Rome ought to be a topic of some rugged interest. The book is informative if not very engaging. The narrator sounds like an 8th grade girl standing up in front of the class to read. So bad it is distracting. And that's bad because notwithstanding an interesting story the text is a bit dull.
