Not that interesting
Revisado: 02-27-24
MC wasn’t terribly interesting and the supporting characters were even worse. The story went nowhere. This was compared to the Stephanie Plum books. Not even close.

The story was good. Romance was not my favorite but it wasn’t bad. Definitely interested in the second book. This one ends on a cliffhanger, which doesn’t bother me.

COULDN'T GET THROUGH FIRST BOOK
Revisado: 10-03-16
Any additional comments?
I tried with all my might to like this series. I was excited to get the first 3 books in one audiobook. At first it seemed promising, however after 5 1/2 hours in I just couldn't take it anymore. So boring, and I did not like any of the narrator's voices. There were several similarities to HP that I found irksome ie: "obscurity shroud" (invisibility cloak). Oh my gosh - seriously??? NOPE - after giving it all I had, I'm going to have to return it. May be okay as a movie / television show.

I LOVE THIS SERIES, BUT THE LOVE TRIANGLE...
Revisado: 07-27-16
Any additional comments?
The Arcana Chronicles quickly became one of my favorite series. And this book was good. However, the love triangle was just plain annoying. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good love triangle. But when it's mostly just 2 guys arguing among themselves about who's better suited for the girl... just NO. And when they weren't doing that, each guy was trying to persuade the girl why she should choose him. ANNNNDDD she was just as bad as they were, stringing them along and insisting she wasn't going to make her decision until the evil forces were defeated, blah, blah, blah. On top of all that, the author did nothing to make the reader lean toward one guy more than the other so whichever choice the girl makes is going to be upsetting to some degree. OH WELL...The first two books were awesome and I'm keeping my fingers crossed the fourth installment will be too.
**I also want to say that I love Emma Galvin. I think she does an amazing job narrating audio books. And yet, after listening to this book and being irritated to tears over the love triangle, I kind of can't listen to her voice right now.

Historia
When Cora Mason wakes in a desert, she doesn't know where she is or who put her there. As she explores, she finds an impossible mix of environments - tundra next to desert, farm next to jungle - and a strangely empty town cobbled together from different cultures and time periods, all watched over by eerie black windows. And she isn't alone.

Some slow spots-BUT-All in all a great story
Revisado: 07-27-16
What did you like best about this story?
Interesting characters, interesting concept.
All the characters are neither 'good' or 'bad' but a very real combination of both.
What does Barrie Kreinik bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Every character had a distinct voice, she did a good job.
Any additional comments?
This was a unique story. At first, I thought it was interesting, then I thought it was slow. Then interesting, then slow, etc. But in the end I realized the slow parts added to the story and world-building as a whole and made it better.
I gave this audiobook 5 stars because as it concluded I wanted to immediately listen to the next book in the series. Often times I will enjoy a book but not enough to continue the series.

Historia
Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets. Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year.

I Didn't HATE It, But Not Super In Love With It...
Revisado: 08-04-15
If you could sum up Hate List in three words, what would they be?
I hate questions like "if you could sum this up in three words." I'm not a beauty pageant contestant, I don't think like that.
This book is about a girl in high school who's dealing with life after her boyfriend commits a school shooting then turns the gun on himself. Real-life scenario stuff. However, I was expecting some over-the-top issues to arise, unrealistic obstacles for her to overcome, ridiculously excessive hatred from her classmates. You know - drama!
Yeah, not with this book. Reading it was like literally sitting next to a real-life girl and listening to her talk to her therapist. The kids at school were wary of her but nothing dramatic. Her mom was worried about her but not freaky obsessed. She had problems but worked them out just like you or I would. She made friends with someone she used to be enemies with, but just casually. She found out she loved painting but... ~~YAWN~~
The book was interesting enough that I listened with mild attentiveness. The ending didn't affect me one way or the other. Whatever. I don't remember how much I paid for it, but if it was more than about $6 then I paid too much. Good heavens I hope I didn't use a credit on it...
Any additional comments?
Maybe I'm just too much of a Gossip Girl / Pretty Little Liars chick. You can narrate to me all day long about mundane daily life as long as it's chock full of overblown conflicts and outrageous solutions :D

They only meant to right the wrongs. It was about getting even. Burn for burn. But the fire they lit kept raging. Reeve ended up hurt, then Rennie ended up dead. Everything will turn to ash if they don’t stop what they started. But now that Mary knows the truth about what happened to her, will she want to? Secrets drew Lillia, Kat, and Mary together. The truth might tear them apart.

So Much Disappointment, Where Do I Begin?
Revisado: 08-04-15
What would have made Ashes to Ashes better?
MILD SPOILERS
Are you kidding me? The only way to make A2A better is to completely rewrite it. The only interesting and enjoyable aspect of this book was the developing relationship between Lillia and Reeve. Which in hindsight was just a cruel joke being played on the readers.
What could Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
They could have NOT gotten out of bed one morning with the decision to completely destroy the captivating story and awesome characters they had created.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Narrators were good. Kat's narrator was my favorite, Mary's my least favorite.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ashes to Ashes?
For starters, I would cut the entire epilogue, which has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever read in my life. At no point in any of the books - even this 3rd one - did anything happen, was anything said, or had any foreshadowing taken place that would lead to the events in the epilogue.
Also, the writers turned Alex into a whiny jerk, Mary into a raging, blood-thirsty brat and Kat into a bland secondary character. This is an obvious departure from how the characters were developed in the first two books and I would make the authors fix it.Seriously though.
Thirdly, I would ask the authors why they spent the entire book convincing the reader that Reeve had a heart of gold deep down inside, only to screw him over in the end. Like, do they think that makes for deep, thought-provoking literature or something?
Any additional comments?
Hey authors! You wanna end your series with something that makes the reader go :
"Oh Gee! Wow! I didn't expect that!"?
Cool.
Except you don't want the reader's next words to be:
"I just want to take this frickin' book and beat it against the floor and then set it on fire and then find Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian and rip their hearts out just like they did to me with their epilogue!!!! I hate them almost as much as I hate Alex and Lillia ending up together!!!! Waaahaaahaaa!! Sniff Sniff"

They chose public school, and now Samantha has to live with them. The problem is that she doesn't care at all - about them, about her friends, about her cheating boyfriend, or even about her parents' divorce. But maybe that's a good thing. Maybe change is a good thing.

Mixed Emotions About This Book
Revisado: 11-13-14
Would you listen to Fallen Crest High again? Why?
No, I can't listen to it again. Although I was hooked right from the start, I couldn't figure out just why. The story rambled quite a bit. After the first half of the book, I wasn't really sure where it was going and what the point was. It was like the book was finished at the halfway point and then the author added page after page of pointless and over-the-top confrontations between various characters.
The way the teenagers treated the adults was appalling. The way the teenagers treated each other was appalling. The way Samantha interacted with the guy she ends up with made me cringe. For example, he would walk up to her, say a few words, PICK HER UP LIKE A CHILD, holding her with his hands under her bottom and her arms around his neck, and have a conversation with her. A serious non-sexual conversation. Then he'd have a conversation with someone else who happens to walk by, while still holding her this way. This happened more than once. UGGGHHH. I couldn't stand it. Keep in mind I'm an adult. Maybe teenagers wouldn't be bothered by the things that bothered me.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending? Hahaha! Nothing happened. I can't even remember the ending because nothing got wrapped up. This is book 1 in a series though, so...
What does Saskia Maarleveld bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think she did a decent job because her narrating didn't stand out while I listened. That's good. But, she's not my favorite. I've heard better.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was addicting. It was nauseating. I can't decide if I liked it or not.
Any additional comments?
There are several books in this series. I haven't decided if I will listen to book 2 or not. Maybe the writing gets better? Maybe there's an actual plot? If so, I would definitely take a chance on the next book.

Mara Dyer believes life can't get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is. She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong.

Reader was awful
Revisado: 08-18-14
Would you try another book from Michelle Hodkin and/or Christy Romano?
I would try another book from Michelle Hodkin but plan to avoid anything read by Christy Romano. She rocked as Kim Possible, but not reading a book.
Has The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I think the book may have interested me if I'd read it myself.
What didn’t you like about Christy Romano’s performance?
I don't think she read well in general, but in particular I couldn't stand it when she was doing the British male voice. I wanted to rip my hair out because it was so annoying. She made him sound ridiculous.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I felt it was tedious and forced. But again, I think a lot of that was because of the reader.
