This audiobook brings together 13 uproarious short stories and one novella, focused on Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium. His stories are celebrated as heroic propaganda pieces, but he’s simply trying to stay alive in a hostile galaxy.

As good as I'd expect, and broader
Revisado: 01-02-24
I'm never not going to enjoy a Cain book, and the regular cast are precisely as good as they always are - the books are great in themselves, and the Audible voice actors never fail to elevate the stories even further.
This anthology uses its format to tell smaller stories: tactical, rather than strategic, engagements; local altercations; nights out gone wrong and stray vignettes. One of many highlights, though, has to be the story told from Jurgen's perspective - one that would never be seen in one of the novels.
Every new release of a Cain story is an instant buy for me, and I have yet to find one that disappoints.

Historia
Commissar Ciaphas Cain and the Valhallan 597th are in the thick of it again, putting down an uprising of Chaos cultists on an Imperial mining world. Though their mission is a success, they find evidence that the corruption might have spread to other planets and that the forge world of Ironfound could now be at risk. The munitions Ironfound produces are vital to the Imperial war effort in the subsector; its safety must be assured at all costs. As battle explodes across the planet, Ciaphas Cain and his regiment come up against allies and enemies old and new in their fight for victory.

Excellent as always
Revisado: 12-05-23
The Cain novels are old favourites, and they have yet to disappoint; fortunately, the same goes for the Audible recordings. Perring and Rawlins could not be better fits for their characters, and the other voice actors hold an equally high standard.
I always keep a couple of Audible credits unused so I can get every new Cain book as it's released, and frankly the only complaint I've ever had with them is that they don't appear often enough.

Excellent as ever
Revisado: 03-27-22
It's a Cain book; everything I expect from it is there, with humour, action and a solid plot. And the Rawlins/Perring team is excellent as always, along with most of the readers Vail cites as supporting sources. The one letdown - and this is, I'm sure, my personal preference rather than anything really wrong with him - is the reader voicing Lawson's fictitious book. Those segments are few and far between, however, and really their only fault is not quite matching the standard set by the rest of the cast.

Historia
Commissar Cain is called to duty once more, saving a governor's daughter from a planet overrun by rebels. The uprising hides something far more sinister however - genestealer hybrids! The search for the source of the alien threat leads Cain to a drifting space hulk - a far safer place than beside the obsessed governor's daughter. But when the Reclamator Space Marines suffer devastating losses at the hands of the Great Devourer, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone.

As good as I've come to expect
Revisado: 02-18-22
Mitchell's Cain series is excellent, of course - but then, having read all the books in paper form, that comes as no surprise.
It's similarly unsurprising that the Perring/Rawlins team is on form; their performances cemented themselves right from the first book, and frankly I have difficulty imagining other readers as those characters. The additional readers are similarly ideal for the characters, just as those brought on for previous books, and Spooner's Scottish accent in particular just feels right for the character.
All in all, it's exactly what you'd expect. There's action, there's military politicking, there's a quirky romance of sorts, and of course the series' trademark sense of humour runs through the whole thing.
The Cain books have become instant purchases for me; as soon as I see them come out, I get them; I know they'll never disappoint me.

Historia
Harry Flashman: the unrepentant bully of Tom Brown's schooldays, now with a Victoria Cross, has three main talents - horsemanship, facility with foreign languages and fornication. A reluctant military hero, Flashman plays a key part in most of the defining military campaigns of the nineteenth century despite trying his utmost to escape them all. Flashman, soldier, duellist, lover, imposter, coward, cad, and hero triumphs in this first installment of The Flashman Papers.

Well written, well read, but not well aged
Revisado: 11-29-21
An excellent reading of a well written and often funny book - but much as Fraser makes clear that it's a satire and that Flashman is not supposed to be seen as a hero, it's nevertheless difficult to really enjoy a book with Flashman as a first-person protagonist. He - the character, one must presume, not the author - cheerfully displays many of those traits that were more common among the colonial British tag many would like to believe, and his casual racism and awful treatment of women is made no more palatable as entertainment by its realism.
It's a good book, but even knowing the point Fraser meant to make I just couldn't enjoy it. Perhaps I'll finish listening to it one day, but probably not.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Untuck this recording quality

Could be great, can't be heard
Revisado: 01-28-21
The content might be great, for all I know; certainly the author's reading of it seems fine as far as I can tell. Sadly, the sound quality is intolerable - page-turning noises and a tiny, echoey sound quality make it sound like it was recorded on a phone while sitting in a kitchen.
This really needs to be rerecorded in a proper studio with a proper microphone; there's no excuse for this sound quality on a professional release.

Historia
For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. This collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies.

Benefits from its narrators
Revisado: 06-07-20
Chances are you already know whether or not you'll enjoy Lovecraft's writing, and of course his more problematic aspects are well known. But the stories are well written cosmic horror in an iconic period of history.
Where this version really shines, however, is in its narrators. The two are Lovecraft enthusiasts, and it shows in the way they engage with the text.

Tim and his friends find out the hard way that you shouldn't question the game master, and you shouldn't make fun of his cape. One minute, they're drinking away the dreariness of their lives, escaping into a fantasy game and laughing their asses off. The next minute, they're in a horse-drawn cart surrounded by soldiers pointing crossbows at them.

Not to my taste
Revisado: 04-11-20
I'm sure this book will be to some people's taste, but it was not to mine. For me, it felt juvenile, an attempt at reenactment an RPG group by someone who'd learned about them from a Chick Tract. Perhaps the author is an avid gamer - but it doesn't come across in the story. It comes across, for me at least, as that Big Bang Theory style of laughing at the neckbeards but with less subtlety...
The redeeming feature is the pretty decent narrator. Which is something, I suppose.
