Average & predictable
Revisado: 04-25-25
Very predictable. I had a strong intuition of where the plot was headed, right away. Less than half way through the book, my intuitions were confirmed & no twist ever came.
Decently enjoyable read one time through, but I wouldn’t consider reading it again.

Lovely way to fall asleep!
Revisado: 03-05-25
Richard does a wonderful job of storytelling, all while speaking in a light & calm tone.
I was able to vividly picture myself in the setting that he created, with his soothing, descriptive words and the sound effects in the background.
I set a sleep timer to stop after each chapter, which made it possible for me to drift off before I was even ten minutes into the story.
When I woke up, I listened to the remaining story while I did my morning stretches, because it was so interesting and entertaining!
I long to travel to each destination & experience them in person, after being able to picture myself there so realistically in my mind. I hope to have more stories to listen to soon. 5 stars all around!

Historia
Fresh off the success of her groundbreaking first play, A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window tells the tragicomic story of a young bohemian couple in New York's Greenwich Village, struggling to do what's right in a world that rewards everything that's wrong. Sidney is a dreamer who wants his own Walden Pond; Iris is a budding actress whose own backstory is a performance. They're caught in a moment where, "the world is about to crack right down the middle," as the play tackles racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, liberal complacency, and more.

Doesn’t work as audio
Revisado: 12-20-24
I love the actors, they are normally very talented, but unfortunately the audio version of this play sounded over-acted without seeing the nuances & expressions of faces and was also very hard to follow.
The switch of scenes & time jumps was extremely hard to follow. I was left rewinding a lot and still confused after.
Some of the female characters were very hard to distinguish between.
I have not seen the play, but the audio ended up giving me major anxiety & triggered me deeply. Especially during the fighting scenes, or which there were many.
The husband and wife fights were very verbally abusive & so toxic!
I barely made it through, hoping to have a better ending.
I was sorely disappointed on every front.
This is one of the lowest ratings I’ve ever given on Audible.
I gave two stars simply for the quotes of other great works.

Carmilla-Bloodthirsty beauty
Revisado: 11-03-24
I thought this was a great adaptation of the original novella. I listened straight through & was engaged in the story from beginning to end.
My reasoning for keeping off the 5th star was because I felt that the end was quite rushed and would have loved a further explanation of Carmilla’s history & the follow up of her mother’s story.
***SPOILERS FROM HERE ON ⬇️***
*What happened to her mother? Wouldn’t she want to avenge the death of her daughter when she returned?
*I was slightly confused with the narrator & Laura situation at the end. Did she actually die, or turn into a vampire? This part was not clearly wrapped up. In the novella, Laura is killed by an elder vampire. Since Carmilla has been feeding on her in this version, an explanation as to her resolution from the feedings would have been nice.
*When the mother didn’t show her face at the masquerade ball with The General, did she ever return? We know she did in the future, to drop Carmilla off with Laura & her father, but The General didn’t explain what happened after his niece died. You think she would have returned for vengeance after Carmilla was killed in her coffin.
Long story short, this was a great adaptation, but I wish it had been just a little better rounded out and slightly longer, to wrap up all the characters and their stories. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Gothic Horror, LBGTQ+ themes or vampire lore.

Lightly dampened blanket
Revisado: 08-31-24
Very long & drawn out story. Ending felt lackluster & obvious, but Davina Porter was brilliant and made the entire listen tolerable.
The author writes well, but the story was not able to keep my attention. I found my mind wandering often & then being brought back into focus by Davina’s amazing voice acting.
Each time the plot drew me back in, the scene would change and I’d be left wondering when the scene action would start up again.

Mrs. Robinson meets Harry Styles
Revisado: 08-22-24
I really enjoyed this book the whole way through, until the end. I just turned 40, so I found myself thinking from Solèné’s point of view. I truly can’t imagine dating a guy 19 years my junior! The closest I came, was dating a guy 7 years younger than me, when I was in my early 30’s.
Even then, the gap was more than I could stand! I would get internally annoyed so often. From his choice in annoying Gen Y slang, to his appearance of being so financially mature for his age, but he was an emotional nightmare!
Oh the therapy, anger and frustration I faxed for years because of that cheating Fuqboi, & he wasn’t even famous! 🤦🏻♀️
I think this book is still worth ready, but be prepared for the end to rip you to shreds!
I wish the story was being continued by the author, but since we’re now 6 years past the publishing date, I don’t think this will happen.
Fortunately, it sounds like the film adaptation will favor the audience reviews.
I’m looking forward to watching it!

Darcy meets Downton with a twist of Doyle
Revisado: 08-20-24
I was captivated from the beginning and stayed engaged with the story until the very end.
I enjoyed hearing about the rich history of the manor & learning a little about antique textiles & the restoration involved in maintaining such a grand estate.
The rom com style attraction between the two main characters was adorable & perfectly timed.
I was slightly annoyed by the last chapter & the loooong process it took to wrap up and resolve what we knew as readers to be inevitable, but not enough to not enjoy the book very much and recommend it to others.
It was an enjoyable story, with just enough mystery, romance, suspense & action to warrant a listen.
I’d also love to see this story adapted into a film or limited series for a streaming service.
I’ll be looking for other suggestions from the author!

The twist!!!
Revisado: 08-08-24
This is my second time listening to this audiobook. I watched the film, listened to the audiobook, waited a few years and just listened again.
By my second time around, I had completely forgotten the major plot twist and thoroughly enjoyed being shocked & surprised all over again!
Great story, considering the majority of the plot takes place in one home with the main character & her internal thoughts.
I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading more from Flynn!

Historia
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

More lies from the FBI & main stream media
Revisado: 07-24-24
It was heartbreaking to re-live the trauma and pain we felt as a nation that day, but worth it to have the straightforward truth told.
We have been lied to, for so long by those in power, it’s refreshing to have such a detailed account of the truth be told.
I highly recommend listening to this docu-series and to share it for your friends and family to discover as well.
To all of those directly affected by the loss and terror of that day, I see you, I hear you and I send you my deepest love, support and thoughts of healing and light. 🙏🏼♥️☮️

If a wet blanket was a short story.
Revisado: 07-10-24
Considering how short this story is, it felt painfully slow and drawn out.
It was a little hard to keep track of all of the female characters, there were so many.
I feel like this had great potential, but they lost me half way through.
I kept rewinding and giving it my all to stay involved with the plot, but I just couldn’t bring myself to be alert and fully invested after several rewinds.
I did keep listening and finished, but I see why this was a free option and I’m glad it’s over.
