Now I get why some people hate horror

[CONTAINS SPOILERS]
The concept of this novella was good enough for me to finish it, despite not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped. The young child character was embarrassing to listen to. The dialogue was so bad, I'm not sure if anyone could have made it better. Actually, I'm not sure if this author has ever met a child. Or been one.
Content warning: "Smell my farts, sis!" That poor VA.
unsatisfying ending and nothing is revealed. moments that should have been cathartic were not, because I was too distracted by plot holes and poor character choices.
[SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER]
witches I can get behind, but a castaway'd alcoholic picking baby wipes and Listerine before NyQuil? seems convenient.

Historia
For over 20 years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity.
But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.

disappointing

Because of this experience, I'm no longer accepting recommendations from male horror fans. I'm a gay woman and still got bored by the sexualization of the two female characters. It was too embarrassing to look past, I'm sad to have wasted a credit on this book.
Performance was good, it's unfortunate the material he was given to narrate made him sound like a repressed creep.
