…especially now that he’s no longer alive and creating new anecdotes. But very happily, he lives among us still!! A book that’s entertaining, funny, enlightening, and delightful from start to finish! Do yourself a favor and get a copy. Better yet, give several, as gifts . I just downloaded another title by Carl Reiner, and I can hardly wait to start enjoying myself all over again.

This book is a small compilation of the millions (billions?) of such obtuse experiences to be gotten from every corner of America. These, along with so much else, need to be entered in the public record as the easy part of our country’s Truth & Reconciliation. Who gentler to bring it, than two nerdy, sweet natured, church-going, midwestern sisters. Lucky you, white America—we deserve Toni Morrison and Isabel Wilkerson, and instead, we get hard insights served up with so much exasperated patience, good humor, and love that it feels like listening to sisterly banter over the Sunday dinner table. And lucky us—that talent and wicked sense of humor run in the Ruffin family. This performance is a great, thought-provoking listen that I highly recommend. Never a dull moment. It would make for a stimulating road trip with friends or family members.

Not to mention, very well read by the author, himself. An amazing and enlightening string of adventure tales through the lens of one of Britain’s best nature cinematographers. A great piece of entertainment utterly impossible to set aside once begun. So good, in fact, that I read it twice this winter, and enjoyed it as much the second time around. If you can’t get enough of David Attenborough’s nature documentaries, you’re absolutely guaranteed to love Gavin Thurston’s book.

I am a Sansei, born and raised in Hawaii. I have been gradually learning more and more about this abominable act forced upon the Japanese Americans. Information was difficult to come by and the pervasive silence by those affected made it seem like it wasn't too much of a hardship. Being from the Islands I knew a lot about the 442nd Inf. and the 100th Batallion, but the translocation was still a mystery. Having visited the Tule Lake site and seeing several museum shows about the Camps, I thought that I knew all there was to know. But this book and the documentary "The Legacy of Heart Mountain" really illuminates what happened and the enormous effect it had on these people's lives.

I felt that the reading was generally well done, aside from several odd pronunciations. Well, shikataganai....

The most eloquent writing and beautiful reading of this vital slice of the American story one could ever wish for. Thank you, Mr. Coates, from the bottom of our hearts!

What didn’t you like about Peter Berkrot’s performance?

Exaggerated emphasis, stagey inflection. Berkot's rollar coaster reading is highly distracting, injects ambiguity as to the meaning of some sentences and ruins the enjoyment of the text. Half David Biencouli, half 1950's William Shatner-- NOT an appropriate voice for scientific material.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Not if Peter Berkot were narrating it. I've already purchased a documentary, based on Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, and Sapolsky is a far better better, more engaging interpreter of his work than Berkot.

Any additional comments?

Unfortunately, this is a prime example of a wonderful book ruined by a bad reading.I had read this book years ago, love the author, had heard Sapolsk lecture in person, and was really looking forward to what I thought would be a fun review of great material. But Peter Berkot's reading of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers wrecked my happy anticipation. Many scientific and historical authors make the rounds on TV talk shows or radio interview programs, giving their audience the opportunity to hear them read and/or discuss their manuscript in their own voice. Not all are scintillating lecturers, but they have an engaging enthusiasm for the material which sustains the audience, and which no grade C actor or professional reader ever manages to capture. Whether or not the author is "professional" in reading their material aloud, matters less than hearing the author's own intended inflection, emphasis and enthusiasm. A stagey reading by a professional reader, destroys the mood and introduces ambiguity, causing uncertainty as to the author's meaning in some cases.

Speedbumps Audiolibro Por Teri Garr, Henriette Mantel arte de portada

Best of all, it's NARRATED by Teri Garr, herself!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-18-10

Just listening to dancer/actress/mother/ambassador/chair, Teri Garr, chronicle her childhood and career in her own words, unabridged and punctuated by her own sense of humor, would have been a great way to spend a few hours. And it was! But you get so much more out of this audiobook. This woman has an admirable disposition toward life-- an appreciation of family, hard work, humor, and close friendship that could only lead her to succeed at anything she focuses her attention on. The audiobook is so upbeat, candid, and entertaining that it was as therapeutic as 6 hours out with your best girlfriends. You hear a lot of good stories, you learn some lessons vicariously, and you get inspired to go out and bite the world in the butt. I had so much fun, the minuted it ended, I listened to it all over again. And it was just as much fun the second time! Do yourself a favor: get this audiobook. Then join me in writing Teri Garr a fan letter.

Enthralling!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-17-10

I bought this book at full price, and as the read began, felt certain I had made a huge mistake. Contrary to the very misleading description given for this item, 98% of the voices of the celebrity narrators listed-- including Robert Altman, himself --are fudged by 3-4 professional audiobook readers, NOT contributed by the actors, directors and producers themselves. The listing of narrators certainly should be changed to protect buyers.

Nevertheless, this is a great audiobook, fully captivating, throughout every one of its 18+ hours. In fact, I liked it so much, that the minute it ended, I played it again, start to finish. It is that insightful, informative and entertaining. The actual voices of Altman's wife, Kathryn, and those of his daughters and sons, along with the stunningly good portrayal of Robert Altman's voice by actor, Michael Murphy, are well worth the price of admission. If you weren't an Altman fan before, this will make you want to rent each of his movies in turn, to experience what you've missed of his extraordinary talent on screen. There will never be another like him and he is missed!

Why No UNabridged Version?

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-17-10

This book is as great a listen as the hardcover was to read. And that's saying a LOT for an abridged version of ANYthing. All the credit for that goes to Irvine Welsh.

Why is there no UNabridged version of this book offered through Audible? What kind of reader needs an abridgment of a book? If you care enough to bother to buy a book, then you should care enough to experience the work as it was created by the author, not as some punked-down, arbitrary edit.
