Historia
In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

It was generally good.
Revisado: 01-08-25
The story was good. The writing/translation was mediocre. The reader was very good, excellent except that her she had a voice for any male character which was the same regardless of the man and didn’t really fit most of the time.

More than I expected
Revisado: 11-10-24
I am impressed with this book - the storytelling, the thoughtfulness, the insight. I listened to it because Bronson Pinchot was reading it and he is consistently the best reader I have found on Audible. But I am going to listen to it again for the writing.

So good I hit play again
Revisado: 09-29-24
The book was so enjoyable I was suplicating for more and must confess I hit play again as soon as my first listening of it ended. I don’t think I have done that before.
Bronson Pinchot as the reader is only the second person to make my list of “best reader ever” on Audible, the first being Anthony Heald reading Crime and Punishment.
As this book was originally dictated, I pictured a Mark Twain walking the room and these words coming from his lips as well as those occasional chuckles.

Their legacy of courage in the face of hatred will move you, captivate you, and ultimately, inspire you.

I did not finish
Revisado: 07-22-24
It isn’t the any of the stories themselves that made me stop. I feel like there is a difference between saying that someone was in anguish (as an example only) and writing descriptively to make us feel that anguish.
It is either the writing or the reading or both that made me stop.

Revisado: 07-21-24
I got to Chapter 2 and stopped because of the writing and the reader.
The story jumped around and was hard to follow. The reader was boring.
Compare to “I Escaped from Auschwitz” by Victor Vrba or “The Hiding Place” to hear well crafted stories and engaging readers.

Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Revisado: 07-21-24
I read this book as a child and am revisiting it years later.
The story is well written and moving and even funny at times.
It was also very well read.
An uncommon 5 stars all around for me.

Historia
Despite the outpouring of books, movies, museums, memorials, and courses devoted to the Holocaust, a coherent explanation of why such ghastly carnage erupted from the heart of civilized Europe in the 20th century still seems elusive even 70 years later. Numerous theories have sprouted in an attempt to console ourselves and to point the blame in emotionally satisfying directions - yet none of them are fully convincing.

Excellent with good pronounciation and reading
Revisado: 07-20-24
I recommend this book. I was especially interested in the first couple of chapters which goes into the historical treatment of Jews and the socio-political context at different times. The statistics are also impressive.
The reader is excellent. The quality of his voice is pleasing. I am able to listen to and follow along easily because of his excellent reading. I don’t absorb things well orally but I am finding this book easy to follow and it is I formation dense.
One commentator criticized his pronunciation so I was waiting for that, but he has good pronunciation. He had correct German pronunciation, for example, the ei(eye) in abteilung, the ch (not church) in Sachsenhausen, the sh sound in straße. The person claims he mispronunces Łódź, but from what I can tell (woodge/wootch) is how it is pronounced in Polish, and how he provinces Yad Vashem is how it is pronounced if you look it up in Hebrew on YouTube and listen to tutorials. So I don’t know what that person is talking about. He did not say any of these words with an accent, but he pronounced them correctly.
Definitely worth listening to!

Historia
Filip Müller came to Auschwitz with one of the earliest transports from Slovakia in April 1942 and began working in the gassing installations and crematoria in May. He was still alive when the gassings ceased in November 1944. He saw millions come and disappear; by sheer luck he survived. Müller is neither a historian nor a psychologist; he is a source - one of the few prisoners who saw the Jewish people die and lived to tell about it. Eyewitness Auschwitz is one of the key documents of the Holocaust.

Listen to this and then…
Revisado: 07-18-24
I listened to this book after listening to “I Escaped From Auschwitz” by Rudolf Vrba. I did this because I recognized the name Filipe as being someone who is mentioned in Vrba’s book. This book adds to the understanding of the story after Vrba’s book (which I highly recommend!), though this book is in and of itself worth listening to.
The reader was pretty good. His biggest strength was his ability to pronounce all the German. Sometimes he over emphasized certain things- words or emotions. For example the word “organize” was slang for getting and possessing any contraband (food, cigarettes, money, etc.) and for quite a while he kept saying that word in an over-exaggerated, nudge nudge wink wink kind of way that felt like it was in quotes but wasn’t intended to be that way by the original author. Things like that happened.
What he experienced and his story are very historically significant.

Historia
April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz.

Excellent except for…
Revisado: 07-15-24
This is an incredible story and an incredible man. It was gripping. The accompanying appendixes are also gripping and Vrba’s clear, precise and well-structured words are very satisfying. The story is very well written and organized - I could not stop listening.
The “except” is the reader. I really like the quality of his voice. It is very believable (could be a 20-year-old) and he coveys emotion well. I am enjoying hearing his voice and I have to admit I don’t like many readers. That part of the reading is making the already amazing story come alive.
So… that only heightens two irritations about him. One is that he pauses at odd times which is distracting. I have upped the speed which helps. Secondly, he cannot correctly prounce basic German (numbers and the word ‘Arbeit’ which if you are reading a story about Auschwitz is something you should know!). He doesn’t know basic pronunciation (v, w, ch, th, ei,!) and emphasizes the wrong syllable (AufräuMUNGSkommando) It is taking me out of the story every time it happens.
I am gripped by the story and it is so well written that this basic mispronunciation is surprising and annoying. Don’t readers research this stuff beforehand? For such an important story in history wouldn’t they make the professional effort to get these things right?!

In The Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, Thomas Childers shows how the young Hitler became passionately political and anti-Semitic as he lived on the margins of society. Fueled by outrage at the punitive terms imposed on Germany by the Versailles Treaty, he found his voice and drew a loyal following.

The ability of the reader to adequately pronounce the German words is satisfying. He was very easy to listen to considering it the amazing amount of details in the book.
