Historia
There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

Lee could make reading the dictionary interesting.
Revisado: 05-09-22
Tragic tale cribbed from history and folklore. Beautiful reading but just an okay story. This is a bit of a shame because there's nothing wrong with that, it's just way more heavily influenced by its source material than was usually the case with his writing.
It's not a classic but it's certainly a fascinating view into the stories he just can't let go of.

Historia
From colorful 30,000-year-old threads found on the floor of a Georgian cave to the Indian calicoes that sparked the Industrial Revolution, The Golden Thread weaves an illuminating story of human ingenuity. Design journalist Kassia St. Clair guides us through the technological advancements and cultural customs that would redefine human civilization - from the fabric that allowed mankind to achieve extraordinary things (traverse the oceans and shatter athletic records) and survive in unlikely places (outer space and the South Pole).

Great book, okay narration
Revisado: 03-11-22
Fantastic. I love this book so much. I love learning about the history of textile production and the lives of the people who made them.
I did have one quibble with the narrator. She didn't always research the pronunciation of things. The one that bothered me the most was in the section on sports fabrics, she mispronounced Nike. Not just once but Many, Many times. It is "NI-kEy" not "Nik." I feel like someone in the production chain should have caught that even if the narrator had never heard of the incredibly famous sportswear brand.

In a word: problematic
Revisado: 01-24-22
There are some parts of history that we shouldn't support by having our protagonists participate in them without question or examination. One of the main characters is a missionary who failed to convert the "savages" (yes, they used that language) in Africa. There is so much harmful language that is resurrected in this book. Yes, it is authentic to the time, but the author has no problem questioning the sexist notions of the time, so why not question the historical racism?
The author also needs a good editor. She has the main character say "Just so" on almost every page and she misuses the expression "in a word." When one says "in a word" one is supposed to follow with a one word summary of the situation, not a full sentence.
Other than that, I enjoy her writing and her characters. I would happily help her edit any future novels.

Historia
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger. Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul.

I read this before and loved it and listening to it is even better. The writer is amazing and the narrator is the best narrator I have ever heard and I go through several audiobooks a week. So fantastic. The voices, the characterizations, the levels of emotion! Getting the next audiobook right now.

Revisado: 04-17-21
A fun historical murder mystery romance. I'd happily read more books in this series, particularly if they keep them pg 13, the way the second half of this book is. I don't mind my characters having sex but I'd rather not be included.
The narrator was fantastic. I appreciated the different accents, the consistency of character voices, and the emotional range.

Fed up with the author
Revisado: 01-18-21
I enjoyed the first one so much that I kept up through this one, but I'm realizing that I'm not enjoying this story only the narrator. The author seems to have forgotten several things about the previous two books, there were so many continuity errors that I checked to see if it was the same author. I'm also heartily sick of the male lead and the whole "will they-wont-they" plot. A man that disapproves of her actions before she is married to him will be significantly less approving and more restrictive once she is his wife.
I am also annoyed that the author doesn't know the difference between corsets and stays or even what era each was used in, and constantly has steel bones coming loose from this wealthy heiress' corset and had her talking about how uncomfortable they are. As a living history reenactor who has been wearing corsets since I was 13, I have never had bones come loose from a well-made cost, nor found them uncomfortable or limiting. It is only cheaply made plastic corsets that have problems like that.

Having solved the two murders that somehow fell in her path, Beatrice Hyde-Clare is on the lookout for a third.
