Historia
Three years after her fateful journeys through the forbidding mountains of Vystrana, Mrs. Camherst defies family and convention to embark on an expedition to the war-torn continent of Eriga, home of such exotic draconian species as the grass-dwelling snakes of the savannah, arboreal tree snakes, and, most elusive of all, the legendary swamp-wyrms of the tropics. The expedition is not an easy one.

Book 2 is even better than Book 1!
Revisado: 02-06-19
I thoroughly enjoyed Book 1 of this series, and looked forward to the second one, but understanding that sometimes the second book in a series isn't as good. I'm thrilled that I was so very wrong. Isabella Camhearst is a wonderful protagonist, both witty and charming and brilliant in her own ways. while the first book ended with some serious tears, this one ended on a more triumphant note and a call to follow Isabella on her next adventure. I'm looking forward to it already!

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

A wonderfully told story of our greatest president
Revisado: 01-14-18
Lincoln is arguably one of, if not the, best president the United States has ever elected. His personality and genius were on vivid display in the cabinet council he chose during his time in power. Goodwin weaves the words of each personal encounter into a fantastic biography of the Lincoln presidency in all its facets. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Historia
Far too often, public discussion of science is carried out by journalists, voters, and politicians who have received their science secondhand. The Story of Western Science shows us the joy and importance of reading groundbreaking science writing for ourselves and guides us back to the masterpieces that have changed the way we think about our world, our cosmos, and ourselves.

Bauer does it again. Another brilliantly crafted historical overview, this time of western scientific thought and the men and women who contributed to our current understanding of the world around us. I highly recommend this and all of Dr. Bauer's other titles as a satisfying read that will entertain and enlighten in equal measure.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Al Franken is still funny and still right
Revisado: 07-18-17
I've read most, if not all, of Senator Franken's other books and this one, while more subtle, carries within its pages the best cache of stories he's told yet. His heart for the people he represents in Congress is plain to hear as he tells the stories of those he's met over the course of 2 terms in office. I know that the title is tongue in cheek, but I see a hint of gravitas in his writing here that could presage his elevation to "a giant in the Senate." I look forward to it.

Historia
At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon.

Good history is confusing sometimes
Revisado: 08-22-16
I loved this book as much as the one Ms. Bauer wrote on ancient civilizations. thus one was far more confusing, of course, because there are sooo many more different rulers and people's to learn about. definitely going to listen to this one again.
