Historia
When it became certain that Edward VI was dying, the duke of Northumberland, who had been ruling England in his name, made a plan that would let him hold onto his power. He dared not let Mary come to the throne because she was fiercely Catholic and he had espoused the Protestant cause. He did not want Elizabeth to rule because he knew her imperious nature would never defer to him. But there was more than one puppet master at work.

The interweaving of history and fantasy was perfect
Revisado: 01-30-24
The story and narrator are both exactly as one could wish. The story is engaging, and my obsessive googling of facts during the story showed that historical details held true. This is a red for fantasy or history lovers.

Ammon's job was simple, to care for the dragon eggs in the Nest. It should have been easy, but it wasn't. When the sun rose after the hatch, he had made an enemy of the most powerful man in the kingdom, and he would soon learn that was the least of his problems!

A nice story
Revisado: 08-21-23
If you have younger people interested in fantasy, this is a perfect story. It isn’t revolutionary writing. The characters aren’t deep, there are a lot of tropes and the book is riddled with Great Coincidences to further the plot. But it’s a nice light read and a pleasant story.

Very Weak
Revisado: 08-16-23
I tried to make it through the first book and could not manage it. The story is very weak, predictable, and convenient. There are good bones, but I have to assume the author just doesn’t have enough experience yet. I didn’t look the author up, but I would deduce they are very young. The writing style makes it almost impossible to immerse oneself in the story. The constant “He said”/“She said” is jarring, and the frequent attempts to insert light banter is forced and annoying. I can tolerate romance if it isn’t the main story line, but the romance in this book is like reading young fanfic.
The narrator has a very pleasant voice, but his inflections and ability to portray characters is lackluster.

Historia
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Truly delightful
Revisado: 08-21-20
From the colorful characters, to the absence of the poor martyr main character trope, to the great story, this book was refreshing and truly enjoyable. I was so pleased with it I immediately restarted the book after the end. Nice easy fantasy with an interesting magic system. Thank you Michael Manning and Tim Gerard Reynolds! I want the other books before 2021. Give us some COVID mercy, Mr. Reynolds, and talk faster.

Historia
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

Narration is intolerable
Revisado: 04-22-20
This might be a passable book. The narration is so bad I honestly can’t tell. I made it to chapter 16 before throwing in the towel. Women are portrayed in the usual two dimensional fantasy roles. Crafty, smart sexy lady. Crafty, smart, atypical, but sexy if you're a real man women. Scrappy, street-smart thief/fighter who takes the poor young man under their quirky, loving wings so he, I assume, grows and surpassed them in skill and wisdom but still manages to stay humble. Sigh.

Almost gave up with the narrator’s phrasing
Revisado: 03-18-20
I have enjoyed every Karen Miller book. They are unique enough to be captivating. The narrator for this book wasn't a great pick. In her attempt to make unique male voices she fell flat and her phrase pacing was problematic.

Intolerable Narration
Revisado: 03-28-19
What happened to Scott Brick? I hate to denigrate Larry McKeever, he’s probably a nice person, but who on earth ever listened to him read and thought he would be a worthy narrator of anything but perhaps technical documentation? The Foundation books have been favorites of mine since the 80s, and even my love of an old, comfortable favorite couldn’t withstand the narrator’s robotic, stilted attempt. Robots are important to an Asimov fan, but this is taking it too literally.
If you are more stoic than I, and if you’re just discovering these books and need the closure you might get through it. It is a wonderful book, and it is sad Asimov’s last book isn’t the treasure it should be.

A missed opportunity
Revisado: 11-13-18
I usually like sci fi/fantasy used as an exercise in societal examination but these books seem created as a canvas for a rather sexist author (is he Mormon?) to make sure everyone knows just how marvelous he is. The hardest points to swallow are a tie between the ‘see how kind and egalitarian I am even when it causes other people pain or discomfort’ moments and the ‘when Joseph says it, you just know it’s clever/perfect/funny/exactly correct’ phrasing (no joke, that’s almost verbatim) which is repeated almost every chapter when one person dares to question this messiah’s mad genius.
The adoration and fawning from literally everyone would have been acceptable had this book been a satire, but alas, no. Just everyone making sure we know how truly intelligent, fun, kind, innovative, generous, compassionate, strong, resilient, humorous, sexy, fair, courageous, bold, gentle, and disciplined this humble
average joe is.
Didn’t fully hate it, and not quite at full on contempt - More at an eye roll level. I consider the premise a missed opportunity. Ok if you just need background noise. I hope the author matures. Maybe he can hit the target next series.
