I do hope this gets faithfully adapted one day, be it live action or dark animation. Quite different from the film that later adapted it, but in a good way. The narrator does a fine job, nothing super special. Overall, it holds up.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

A great book for intermediate-level history fans
Revisado: 09-17-24
If you are past the beginner parts of learning history but aren't so into it that you try to find arcane and obscure academic papers on tiny topics about days long gone, this is a great book for you. It's comprehensive but not bogged down in minutia like, all due respect to him, Will Durant could often be. I felt all the important subjects were covered in an excellent manner. I see some Reddit atheist types really don't like how she takes Abrahamic myths at face value, but she does the same to nearly every religion or folklore. She questions them of course, but taking them at face value tells us a lot about the peoples who wrote them and the culture and geopolitical atmosphere they lived in. The narrator is good and thankfully does a good voice change when narrating primary sources and accounts.

Five years after the Death Star was destroyed and Darth Vader and the Emperor were defeated, the galaxy is struggling to heal the wounds of war, Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins, and Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of new Jedi Knights. But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor’s warlords - the brilliant and deadly Grand Admiral Thrawn - has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic....

I hope this is given an anime-style series one day
Revisado: 09-17-24
What TRULY started Legends, and what a way to start. What can I say that hasn't already been said before about this masterpiece? It and many other Legends books and comics and video games combined jettisoned Star Wars into the likes of Star Trek in terms of complexity, world building, characterization and plots. Marc Thompson does amazing narration, and all the proper sound effects and music cues are used. With all of that, it makes it feel like an actual canon true continuation of the original trilogy. Thrawn is an amazing villain, and Joruus is good, but the true best character here is, in my opinion, Admiral Palleon. His character arc is among the best from here all the way to New Jedi Order. I hope Disney-Lucasfilms continue to publish more and more Legends audiobooks. I for one would like to see the young jedi knights (until book six), new jedi order (including Rogue Planet) and Darksaber be given audiobooks.

Weaving tales of the everyday world transformed into an unrecognizable place, where reason no longer exists and logic ceases to explain the workings of the universe, Clive Barker provides the stuff of nightmares in packages too tantalizing to resist. This first volume contains the short stories : "The Book of Blood," "The Midnight Meat Train," "The Yattering and Jack," "Sex, Death, and Starshine," and "In the Hills, the Cities,"

Overall pretty good
Revisado: 09-17-24
Some stories better than others. Some maybe a little too bizarre in character motivations that come out of nowhere at last minute. I liked it, but I hope Clive Barker improved and perfected with each volume. This is only one I've listened to so far. All the narrators are great. My favorite story was probably Midnight Meat Train.

Historia
From the trenches of World War I to Nazi Germany to Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the 20th century was a time of unprecedented violence. Yet while such monumental violence seems senseless, it is not inexplicable. If we can understand the origins of violence, we may prevent even greater horrors in the century to come. These 24 necessary lectures trace the violent history of the 20th century, beginning with its early roots in the American and, especially, the French revolutions.

Historia
Socialism was man's most ambitious attempt to supplant religion with a doctrine claiming to ground itself in "science". Each failure to create societies of abundance or give birth to "the New Man" inspired more searching for the path to the promised land: revolution, communes, social democracy, communism, fascism, Arab socialism, African socialism. None worked, and some exacted a staggering human toll. Then, after two centuries of wishful thinking and bitter disappointment, socialism imploded in a fin de siecle drama of falling walls and collapsing regimes.

A biased yet informative masterpiece
Revisado: 04-04-21
I myself am a syndicalist, which is technically a form of socialism, and yet even I enjoyed this book. There is a clear American neoconservative capitalist bias but it mostly doesn't cloud the surprisingly mostly well-done research and narrative of the book. It chronicles the life of modern socialism from its origins in the French Revolution by Babeuf, peaks at Lenin's USSR and Fascist Italy (while not going too far and claiming fascism is far-left and socialist. He calls its early stages far-left but shows they later went to the right and adopted capitalism and later corporatism until they attempted socialism in 1943, but highlights the socialist roots of fascism. He only briefly touched upon National Socialism), and ends with Sanders and Xi. I do however wish he went into more detail with chapters dedicated to Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot (the last figure being mostly skimmed over) and I also noticed the occasional error in his research. For example, his chapter on fascism contains a quote taken from Hermann Rauschning, who is largely considered heavily unreliable by the historical community. Overall, a good book that anyone can learn from, especially fellow socialists who must learn the failures of socialism and the successes of capitalism to see what can be combined from the two camps.

The definitive account of Germany's malign transformation under Hitler's total rule and the implacable march to war. This magnificent second volume of Richard J. Evans's three-volume history of Nazi Germany was hailed by Benjamin Schwartz of The Atlantic Monthly as "the definitive English-language account... gripping and precise." It chronicles the incredible story of Germany's radical reshaping under Nazi rule.

FANTASTIC
Revisado: 03-14-21
An absolutely fantastic book on the Third Reich from 1933-1939 right as the war with Poland breaks out. You could hardly find a more entertaining yet detailed account of pre-war Nazi Germany. It talks about everything from every facet of life from the military to the economy to the night of broken glass to negotiations with the French and British. I definitely recommend this. This trilogy is the best there is on the Third Reich.

A short yet well made book about the oldest mythos
Revisado: 12-22-20
This was a decent book all around. The narrator was fantastic though for the stories themselves while classics in their own right were less interesting me to than other mythologies. Likely due to time having lost many conclusions and consistencies between the stories. If you want a short narrative telling of the stories of Mesopotamian mythology, this book will do you well.

These 24 lectures are a vibrant introduction to the primary characters and most important stories of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Among those you'll investigate are the accounts of the creation of the world in Hesiod's Theogony and Ovid's Metamorphoses; the gods Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos, and Aphrodite; the Greek heroes, Theseus and Heracles (Hercules in the Roman version); and the most famous of all classical myths, the Trojan War.

it was a good lecture but the narrator, while very interested in this field, is a little dull in voice. But if you want an overview on greek myth and the psychological, historical and other contexts for them, this is the lecture.

Historia
The 30 years of contemporary US history following the fall of the Soviet Union tend to get short shrift, perhaps because this period of history is still being written, or perhaps because the end of the Cold War is a natural stopping point, an inflection point when one story ends and something new - something unpredictable - begins. Nonetheless, events of today have been profoundly shaped by the past several decades, and one must understand this recent history to understand the world today.

So Patrick is a fantastic narrator, and this audiobook is well researched and short, but it's incredibly Americentric. Still, for the length and price one can't beat the overall excellence of this work.
