Historia
The village of Badger's Drift is the essence of tranquillity. But when resident and well-loved spinster Miss Simpson takes a stroll in the nearby woods, she stumbles across something she was never meant to see, and there's only one way to keep her quiet. Miss Simpson's death is not suspicious, say the villagers. But Miss Lucy Bellringer refuses to rest: her friend has been murdered. She is sure of it.

Amateurish story and plodding reading
Revisado: 11-14-23
Ugh that Agatha Christie trick of spilling it all in the last few pages! I found little to like about any of the characters, not even the principal DCI.
And the reading! Halting and staccato without opinion. Although I disliked the story, the author does have a wry humor which was lost in this plodding reading. It’s one thing to step back and let the author’s voice come through but it’s another to smother it in halting monotone.
The reader failed to pick up nuances of dialect and adjust his own accent to match. All his characters had the same boring poshness. Indeed he seems capable of only two character voices: narrator and “other”. I will endeavor to avoid John Hopkins.

Historia
Young Clodagh Brown loves to climb, especially the giant electrical pylons that form a neat row outside her parents’ home. When this obsession breeds tragedy, her shamed family sends her to London for college. As a respite from insufferable classes, she begins climbing atop the local houses with her unique band of friends. But it is a practice that lands the group in a kidnapping scandal - and leads to a terrifying climax on the rooftops. Grasshopper is a meticulously crafted novel - a sharp and textured thriller....

Not her best
Revisado: 10-28-23
Perhaps it was the dreary tone of the reader but this dragged. Not much happened, slowly. I found it hard to like any of the characters.

Historia
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet's sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools. Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Captivating story, dreadful readers
Revisado: 06-11-23
The first part is read. By. Someone. Who. Pauses. Between. Words. So annoying! Yes, I get that he wants the Mexican accent to come through but no one talks like that in real life.
The second part is read by someone who sounds like Siri on quaaludes. So dreary, expressionless and boring.
These VO artists clearly have skills, but the entire project needs a director to iron out the bumps and provide an artistic direction. This audio book is an embarrassment.
I gave up then. I’ll read the actual book rather than be tormented by this poor experience.
With that out of the way, the story is engrossing and captivating, being propelled (as far as I can tell) by character. I can’t wait to read it for real.

Historia
Convicted serial killer Benjamin Fisher has finally offered to lead San Bernardino detective Daniel Ellis to the isolated graves of his victims. One catch: he'll only do it if FBI profiler Reni Fisher, his estranged daughter, accompanies them. As hard as it is to exhume her traumatic childhood, Reni can’t say no. She still feels complicit in her father’s crimes.

Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed.

Unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 12-30-21
Agatha Christie famously introduced new facts at the end to tie up her stories in a neat bow. But that’s cheating and Ms Cleaves, though following in great footsteps, really should have worked some of those little surprises into the body of her narrative, rather than pulling them fully formed from a hat at the end.
The unsatisfying arc notwithstanding, I enjoyed the style. Short sentences. Fully-fleshed characters. Ms Cleaves deals with neurodiversity and gender with respect and without preaching.
Mr. Aldridge read beautifully. My minor quibble is that he could have dug into the accents a little more. His Scouse was at time barely discernible from his Devon. Ordinarily this is not important but when the author very explicitly made regionality and accent part of her characters, I think a richer Devon and a flatter Scouse would have enhanced the listening experience.

In this pulse-pounding short thriller for fans of Big Little Lies and The Last Mrs. Parrish, Maggie Cabot refuses to sit by idly as police re-open an investigation into the mysterious death of a woman her husband used to know. After two decades in a near-perfect marriage, Maggie and James Cabot are enjoying their first year as empty-nesters in their charming Florida suburb, until two detectives arrive at their front door and change their lives forever.

Historia
When she arrived at MIT in the 1990s, Alien wanted to study aerospace engineering, but she was soon drawn to the school’s venerable tradition of high-risk physical trespassing: the original “hacking”. Within a year, one of her hallmates was dead, two others were on trial, and two had been institutionalized. Alien’s adventures were only just beginning.

MIT exceptionalism. You know, you’re actually not all that.
Otherwise I found it quite uplifting to hear about a woman’s success in this overwhelmingly male world.

Masterful reading of a tale of terror
Revisado: 05-07-20
First, let me say how much I appreciate Gabra Zackman's masterful reading. She has perfected the art of getting out of the way so that the author's voice comes through unfiltered. Genius!
The material was a bit hard to take. Ms. McNamara's obsession with the GSK is a little unsettling, and her simple telling of the tale did nothing to hide the awfulness of the GSK's rampages. No amount of clinical language can hide it, and thankfully Ms. McNamara did not choose to go that route. Nor did she shy away from the evil she described.
Am I glad I listened to this audio book? Am I a better person as a result? Is the world a better place now that I know that evil stalked in my metaphorical back yard, not that long ago?
