Historia
Uniting universal themes with a wonderfully personal vision of the world, Hans Christian Andersen found magic in the landscape of childhood. His talking animals and living toys shine a sparkling light on the strange wisdom of innocence and the deceptive nature of adulthood. These stories have now been adapted into countless classic films (including The Little Mermaid, The Red Shoes, and Frozen - which was based on “The Snow Queen”) and have become part of our everyday speech, such as when we talk about “ugly ducklings” and “the emperor’s new clothes.”

haven't aged well, not great for young kids
Revisado: 12-19-24
My six year old was not interested. The stories haven't aged well. Interestingly enough, they almost all contain/focus on marriage.

What a slog (15 hours in)
Revisado: 09-25-24
I'm 15 hours into this 54 hour book and I think that will be it for me. I really don't understand how this piece is so well reviewed, I would venture to say it's a bad book. I have struggled to find any redeeming qualities with enough yield to keep me interested.
Perhaps there is some cultural background I am missing, but this story has been unpalatable from the start.
You are frequently expected to accept significant plot movements and character developments without any backstop or exposition. For example, Musashi just wakes up one day and becomes an all-powerful warrior. Huh?
Further, the book should be entitled "Musashi : and other less interesting characters".

Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

I hope the book is better than this.
Revisado: 04-23-24
nothing more cringe than having to listen to a sex scene in an audiobook while you're parked at a light. I hope the book tells a better story than this one because it was not very good. perhaps the dramatized version took away from the actual story.

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

Boring compared to odyssey
Revisado: 11-15-23
I read the books backwards on accident, and I am glad I did. this one was a real struggle to hold my attention. name dropping is 30% of the "story". the core story, with the gods intervening in human activity, is very cool.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

A homoerotic story.
Revisado: 04-23-23
I cringed listening to 2+ hours of Patroclus struggling to hold back a pre-teen boner for Achilles. It detracted from the story. Couldn't finish it.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Boring. There's ice. It's wet. It's not habitable.
Revisado: 08-04-21
The title tells the whole story of the book. Now you don't need to read it, unless you like minutia and hearing the same thing over and over again.
