Historia
Why have so many Americans turned against democracy? In this deeply reported book, Katherine Stewart takes us to conferences of conspiracy-mongers, backroom strategy gatherings, and services at extremist churches, and profiles the people who want to tear it all down.

A little ranty, narrator is annoying
Revisado: 03-03-25
I’m generally of the same political view but by the 3rd chapter she’s getting a little strident. To be fair though, I think the main problem is the narrator. Rushed cadence, high voice.

Historia
Gaia is dying. That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth’s death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia.

Not One of His Best
Revisado: 05-20-24
I usually forgive plot holes if there’s plenty of fun banter from characters I like. This book had an unbelievable story line (really, Letty and Lucas would be the ones called in to save the world???). The dialogue isn’t much fun. Also annoying was the narrator’s mispronunciation of New Mexico towns. I live in the desert Southwest and no one pronounces Santa Fe and Pecos the way he did…emphasis on the wrong syllable really grating.

Historia
A mid-air collision in the Alaskan wilderness between two small aircraft leaves ten people dead. Was it a bird strike, pilot error...or premeditated murder? Then an eleventh body is found in the wreckage: a man shot gangland style, twice in the chest and once in the head. In an investigation that reaches to the highest levels of government, justice may not be served, but Kate Shugak is determined that the truth will out, even at the risk of her life and the lives of those she loves most.

A Bit of a Disappointment
Revisado: 10-10-23
I always love visiting Alaska through these books, but the beginning of this one both jumps around and manages to drag. No worries as it will get going later, but it was a little disappointing. Some will not like it because politics creeps in, but sadly, it is part of the world now.

Historia
Los Angeles is a city of sunlight, celebrity, and possibility. The L.A. often experienced by Homicide Lt. Detective Milo Sturgis and psychologist Alex Delaware, is a city of the dead. Early one morning, the two of them find themselves in a neighborhood of pretty houses, pretty cars, and pretty people. The scene they encounter is anything but. A naked young man lies dead in the street, the apparent victim of a collision with a moving van hurtling through suburbia in the darkness. But any thoughts of accidental death vanish when a blood trail leads to a nearby home.

Annoying Narration
Revisado: 12-26-22
I know John Rubenstein is supposed to be the best, but this one grates. The voices were annoying and I guess I’d never noticed when I read, rather than listened to, Kellerman, but he rarely writes in complete sentences and after a while, it makes the narrator sound breathless. Not Kellerman’s best.

Writing Bad, Narration Worse
Revisado: 01-10-17
I usually love this author but this book was so bad, I didn't even finish. Like others, I wonder if this is an early book reissued.

Historia
Whistlestop tells the human story of nervous gambits hatched in first-floor hotel rooms, failures of will before the microphone, and the cross-country crack-ups of long-planned stratagems. At the bar at the end of a campaign day, these are the stories reporters rehash for themselves and embellish for newcomers. In addition to the familiar tales, Whistlestop also remembers the forgotten stories about the bruising and reckless campaigns of the 19th century.

Not as good as the usual Lescroart

I love this author's book, but this one wasn't quite up to snuff. The narrator was terrible, especially with women's voices.
