I grew up reading Silverberg Asimov Heinlein and many others. These “classics “ just are not good.

Took a Long Time for the Story to Get Going

Most of this book read like a scientific technical manual. Don't know how much of it was BS, just that it wasn't very interesting. Author needs to keep in mind the story is the most important thing, not the full details of EVERYTHING - and I'm not exaggerating. The story itself is, to me, a terrifying alien attack scenario and could have been a good book. I just wish the author had left out the mind-numbing explanation, for example, of what makes a bomb explode and the details of dozens of other useless information that interrupted the flow of the story. It was hard to stomach the 'good 'ol boy taking care of the woman folk' attitude by the author. That and the military hoorah crap was a bit too much. These gun-ho military guys talk and act like they're some kind of religious cult. I'll not listen to the next book.

The author knows a lot about a lot of things. And he keeps wandering off the story to tell us these other things - IN MIND, NUMBING DETAIL - things that don't advance the story and seems to be there just to let us know how smart he is. And then, Clein's take on "let's throw together a flimsy spaceship and rocket out farther than ever before and be the first to talk to an alien" is nothing new. Other reviews seem to praise the science, but I need a story too. When he went into depth to describe fixing the sewer pipe I almost gave up.

Best collection of short stories I've read in years. And they're so different from each other. How does this guy come up with so many great stories?

I got through this morass of a story. Why? Hoping it would amount to something. Calvin (Calvin and Hobbs) says, disappointment comes from having expectations. Apparently mine were too high. Not for the average reader. I love hard sci-fi, but this often read like a technical manual. The story could have been told in an hour. The rest was only mildly entertaining drivel. The only real drama happened at the end of the book and served as a cliff-hanger for his next tome. I won't be venturing on.

I don't know why I got this book, except there is a good story buried in all the political dealings. Not very interesting. Hard to follow. I doubt I'll even try to finish this one.

With the last book, I foresaw inevitable problems for Earth. I'm sure everyone else did too. I'm glad Alanson continued in that direction with this book. Maybe this series of stories just never ends. I'm okay with that. Hopefully we'll get to the Beer Can discovering its past. That could be quite interesting as I've noticed it's getting more in touch with it's "feelings". Maybe it will have a real tearjerker encounter upon finding its "dad". LOL

I thought this story would have an interesting twist - young man with a learning disability fighting daily for his life in a post apocalyptic world. But no. The author has us believing this guy is more knowledgeable, more intelligent, more aware of his circumstance, and more prepared for the end of the world than any character of any other book I've read of this genre. What a disappointment.

Everyone talks the same - like old country folk. Even the young ones...and those from the city. This is no more interesting then the a day-by-day journal of my next door neighbor (except my neighbor doesn't get shot at any more). Nobody is traumatized by the death of most everyone in the world, INCLUDING their family members. They just immediately join together and start rebuilding their lives. They ALL do the most practical, logical, thoughtful, mature actions any situation demands - EVEN THE DOGS. A shootout with a marauding gang is followed by a well thought out discussion of how the next time they should be more prepared. These are people who have never shot at a person or been shot at. Anyone of them horrified or even scared a little? Not a bit. Just need to be more prepared.

Seems to be written by an elderly gentleman, a wanna-be survivalist, a reformed chauvinist who goes overboard trying to show us that he has become aware that women are real people but down deep wishes he could go back to the good-ol'-days so he could take care of the little woman. Don't think I'll be finishing this one.

I've read a number of Michael Connelly's books with mixed reviews. This one, I thought, was a notch above the others. Yes, there is a more details than needed and the complexity loses me at times. But he makes his characters really come alive. And the ending...well, he didn't do a Perry Mason ending like so many other authors. He drew out the outcome like a dog chewing down a bone to, finally, the marrow. Okay, bad analogy. But the endingt was so enjoyable I got up at 4 am just to finish hearing the conclusion.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No - Written for children or adult dummies. I don't know any of those. Explains everything in detail and assumes we can't figure anything out for ourselves.

If you’ve listened to books by Greg Cox before, how does this one compare?

Never read his books and wont read another.

Have you listened to any of Robert Petkoff’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He was okay.

Was Captain to Captain worth the listening time?

An emphatic no.

Any additional comments?

I love Star Trek but are all the books this poor?
