Sweet but not sickening holiday romance

Both characters are likable but flawed and work well together. There’s a good story and the narrator is pleasant to listen to.

But my luck is finally looking up. I’ve teamed up with a hottie police officer and his snarky, lie-sniffing German shepherd to catch criminals. Bewitching cozy mystery series
Revisado: 04-29-23
I actually reviewed the first four books of this series, but as I said before it was nice to return to Bijou Mer (which is also the setting of Ms. Johnson's Spells and Caramels). One of the things I look for in book series is personal growth of characters, and got it in spades in this series. All three of the main characters grow in major ways, and smaller growth in two of the secondary characters. I love that each book is self contained when it comes to the mystery, but builds on each other for interpersonal relationships. Each Mystery gets better and my favorite is the last story where the main characters get to meet the characters from the Spells and Caramels series, but done in a way that someone who has not read that series will still be able to understand and be entertained by their interactions.
I have said it before but I'll say it again, I really like that Ms. Johnson write fair mysteries, in that if you pay attention to the clues you can figure out the mysteries yourself but they aren't too easy.
I have only two minor quibbles about this series, one is that the hygiene of the main character, or lack thereof is sometimes a little too detailed, and occasionally her interpersonal skills are lacking and can drag scenes on for a little too long. But these are minor irritants in a really fun series.
As a audio book, I like the way the books are separated making it easy to remember which book you are on. I also enjoy the way Ms. Somerville reads, with distinct voices for each character.
I really enjoyed them and recommend you give them a try if you like cozy paranormal mysteries.

An Entertaining Set of Magical Mysteries
Revisado: 02-09-23
I enjoyed this box set immensely, which are each self-contained while allowing the characters to develop (and trust me the main character does not start out likeable, being self-centered and full of self pity). However she and most of the other characters grow as individuals (minus a certain police dog) while handling interesting mysteries that, are fun and fair (if you pay attention you probably will be able to solve them, but will require some thought).
Hannah Somerville has a pleasant voice, and is a decent voice actor with a decent emotional range that makes this set a pleasure to listen to.

An interesting world with cozy crimes
Revisado: 11-12-22
First I want to say that I received this as an ARC copy in exchange for writing a review. However, I will be fair especially as it was on my wishlist before I got this opportunity.
While most of the mysteries were not super difficult to figure out (which isn't a problem for myself, as I like feeling clever), the characters and world are engaging, particularly if you enjoy Harry Potter. Most of the characters grow throughout the series, and the world undergoes major changes, all while maintaining a relatively optimistic out view. The only parts I didn't particularly enjoy are when Ms. Johnson tried a little too hard to be funny and put the main character in ridiculously embarrassing positions, though thankfully they were uncommon (I believe four to five times over the course of ten books) and fairly short lived (less than an hour of audio each time).
The audio production is pretty good, particularly considering that it is 64 hours of audio, which is a lot of reading and editing. There are two incidents where the narrator, Ms. Somerville, clearly needed to restart and she used a clicking sound to indcate this but was missed by the audio editor so the story repeats a short segment. This happens in Chapter 24 of Book 2, and in Chapter 6 of Book 3. While I didn't love Ms. Somerville's voice, she is an excellent reader with a number of distinct voices for most of the characters and is a good representation of the main character in particular.
In short I would not have been disappointed with it if I had spent a credit, as it was an enjoyable set of paranormal cozy mysteries.
