I want to see this with Taiko Waititin playing Otto. Absolutely brilliant book and just hilarious.

While I loved the story concept, the main character and the build up, there were so many sounds that trigger head pain I found it taking me out of the story. Sometimes I couldn't understand the garbled messages they found along the way. Still, I am curious to see where this goes as the ending felt more like a cliffhanger than an ending. Also, part of the attraction was the location. I grew up in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and loved hearing that in their voices and actions.

This is such a fun story, there is music used to create atmosphere, introduce characters and demonstrate the situations Amelia finds herself in throughout the story. I was able to lose myself in the story for several hours at a time and just forget for a little bit the horror of the pandemic. I recommend this strongly for a fun escape from reality. trigger warning though: there's a lot about drowning.

I loved this. The level of detail, the strength and individuality of the characters and the intricacies of politics, bargaining, intrigue and suspense all tied cleanly and entertainingly into a fairy tale of two world's locked in struggle. The strength, cunning and wit of the women shines through and while there is an element of romance, there is more so a story artfully told of two kingdoms seen through the eyes of the two main characters. Loved the narrator, the attention to detail...this story just kept pulling me further and further into it's world. I want more. I love this author and will gladly purchase her next book.

I chose to finish this book but I cannot recommend it. I only wanted to finish because I'd invested in the main story line. But of all five books, this one felt largely unedited, repetitive and uncharacteristic compared to the others. The fourth was getting bad. This one made me angry with the lack of respect for the reader's intelligence. Almost nothing was left to the imagination, every implied thing was explained and if two or three different characters saw something, each time the thing was explained and described. Also every character had the same phrases, attitudes and condescension toward the main character. And while I get the teens are often melodramatic, by 19 and with her history, Elena should have become less angst-ridden and much quicker in understanding. It often seemed that she was made to not get it so the author could exposition fairy at the reader. It was frustrating and felt like an effort on the authors part to get some level of a word count. The whole series could have been one book shorter at least. In listening to it I can only surmise that the author kept recapping for their own sake and then failed to edit it down to a clean story. Not recommended.

While the technical language got a little out of hand in this one, the characters were still vivid and distinct in personality. The narrator did a phenomenal job bringing them to life and the intensity as things got more serious was palpable. Not as well written as The Martian but still very entertaining.

Loved this retelling of Cinderella. The take using a sci-fi theme created an adorable take on the original. my only complaint is that for some reason the recording repeats in multiple locations. It sounds almost like a broken record when it happens. However this is minor and I was able to look past to the next part of the story. Also enjoyed the back and forth of two narrators making the protagonists distinct. Just fun all around.

Would you consider the audio edition of Thunderlight to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version. However I learned later that this book incorporates a shorter book and a longer book. I couldn't understand why the author spent so much time rehashing important moments that were just a few chapters before until I looked up the series. A lot of the review was simply unnecessary and created distraction from the story. That's not necessarily a narration issue but if it was in print, I would have read the two books seperately and it would have been a little less annoying. But seriously, I skipped the entirety of chapter 6 when I learned it was just review of the first book. Way too much reviewing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sammy Leaf because she's got this undying love of her brother even as he becomes even more of a jerk. And she keeps standing by her friends showing a great deal of compassion in everything she does. Humble and helpful but not a pushover.

Which character – as performed by A. T. Chandler and Erin Moon – was your favorite?

I think Becky had the most unique voice and character. She's read as a blunt, no nonsense sort of flippant but also deeper-than-you'd-think kind of character.

If you could sum up Frostbite in three words, what would they be?

fun, escapist, darkening

What other book might you compare Frostbite to and why?

There are similarities to Harry Potter, King Arthur, Narnia, etc. It's got qualities of magic, secret places, lost heirs and a need to fight off a great evil.

Have you listened to any of Erin Moon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to Erin perform through all three books available for audio. She does a decent job. I felt like I was listening to William Shatner a few too many times because of her cadence but otherwise, I thought she brought the characters to life and gave them each a personality rather well.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Rubicon's fate is in her hands...

Any additional comments?

A little long winded with a great deal of narrative spent regretting the loss of others, missing those who have passed, self blame and brooding. I wish the author had spent less time having Elena seek absolution from absolutely everyone and more time developing a streamlined story. Still it was fun when you get past the constant, "it's my fault" language. I do like that some of the supporting characters got a bit more air time. The plot seemed a bit overly contrived at times but it's a fantasy world so why not. Also, has no one in this world ever heard of anger management skills? Surely one of the adults would have thought, "well, she's got this issue that isn't going away, lets help her work with it instead of just looking at her in a worried fashion all the time." I can't believe that she would be allowed to lash out irrationally in a school full of other students and then be left to her friends to figure things out.
