I’ve been appreciating Sandra Brown ‘s books since her romance writer days. Her books keep getting better as she evolved from romance to romantic suspense to creating her own special brand of mystery/thriller/suspense with richly developed characters. I loved Overkill and new-to-me narrator Kyf Brewer nailed it. Loved the twisty plot and secondary characters and the sensitively explored moral quandary. Great book and just right narration.

Immersive reimagining of a post-apocalyptic world. The voices perfectly mirror the grim and icy world these survivors inhabit. In the end though, there is Hope. Please let there be more chapters!

This narrator...

It took me a long time to get through this book because I had to limit the amount of time I was able to tolerate narrator Joel Froomkin’s ACTING before my anxiety level went soaring. This man doesn’t seem to have an inside voice, much less a dimmer switch. He shouts, he whimpers, he EMOTES. Every line of dialog is supercharged with FEELINGS. It was EXHAUSTING!
I wish whoever makes casting decisions would go back to any of the female narrators who did such great work with Ms Rose’s previous books. I look forward to the one book a year from Karen Rose. What a sad thing it is for me to not enjoy it when I’m predisposed to love it.

There is a huge difference between a series and a serial. Series books are complete stories often with different protagonists and connected in the same world. I’ve read and happily kept up with dozens of series and dropped out of some series that I wasn’t interested in continuing.
This is a serial ending in a cliffhanger. You have to buy another book to get a complete story. Pretty sneaky to call it series. I’m going to return this one and never buy this author again.

The heroine is an 18 year old college freshman, the plot is nonsensical, there’s some kind of love triangle or maybe a quadrangle, I’m not sure who the hero is, it is decidedly not a romance, and it ends on a cliffhanger. Nope.

How to abuse the talent of a deep-voiced, supremely sexy narrator:
Make him read in the voice of a whiney teen girl. For hours. Oh, Shane East, I'm so sorry. What they did to you is unspeakable.
I loved the first Royally book, skipped the second because I hate bachelor reality shows, but the idea of grown-up Ellie appealed and I hoped to love this one as much as I did her big sister Olivia's book.
Welp, the blurb lies. Ellie is not 22. For the first two plus hours she is an insecure and babyish 18 year old, crushing on her bodyguard. And she whines. And whines. Poor Shane.
DNF. I just can't. Returning for credit.
