The author tries too hard to write well and so doesn’t. Examples such as “she was gladder” instead of “more glad” and “scarcer” instead of “more scarce” were not as bad as the offensive use of “she snuck out.” In an era when sneaking out was rarely used, I was disappointed to see today’s disgraceful“snuck” appear too often. If the author is writing a period piece, at least TRY to have the characters speak authentically. I was so disappointed in the lack of character development in this book, but the writing itself made me give up my fight to hang on to what could have been a decent storyline.

A touching story of a disparate group of people who are bound together through a library and its wealth of books. If you’ve been lucky enough to live long enough, you will recognize the author’s depiction of life’s highs and lows, interwoven among the many people you meet.

Not a bad story, but the narrator was terrible. He made it sound like Vincent Price reading nursery rhymes.

Long a lover of Mark Twain’s work, I enjoyed this book very much, and I think Samuel Clemens would have liked it, too. Giving James the ability to read and write was a game changer. The work managed to be faithful to Mark Twain’s backdrop as it wove a different type of basket to hold the believable story. The excellent narrator kept the story true to the charm of the era while paying homage to that awful time in America’s past.

I was hoping to hear details of The West Wing—its creation, writing, status, etc.—but it was actually an unabashed promotion of the actors’ philanthropy and after-WW lives. No thanks.

The story, reader, and overall production was the best caliber. Any American interested in learning more about Grant and/or the Civil War will not regret the length of this audiobook.

I tried so hard to like this book, having read similar stories about women serving the USA during WWII. But I gave up halfway through this limp noodle of a plot that offered no endearing characters. The performance was good, but the poor female reader had nothing of substance to work with.

The book is about Benjamin Franklin and his son, William Franklin, yet the author chooses to refer to each man merely as “Franklin” so often that it is confusing as to which Franklin he is referring. Then we meet Temple Franklin, and the author finally begins to use first names to better identify the characters. This could have been such a good book had the Franklins been better identified throughout, and a different reader to read it for us.

Absolutely delightful! This is the book to pick up when you need a good dose of hope and optimism; where there is no “man’s inhumanity to man.”

I was greatly moved by this novel. My family boasts strong, intelligent women, and words and dictionaries have always been important to us. The author allowed my mother and her mother to come alive for me in ways I hope my own daughter will someday experience as well. My thanks to the author of this book and to its exemplary reader.
