So, my wife introduced this copy to our family to read as a group.
I, a happily married, father of two teens, finished this book in two days. This book is a primer for anyone wanting to take control of your emotional well-being. Sarah writes so spritely and it kept me flipping through pages eager for the next exercise. It's a fun read because you sense that each paragraph has a new gem to help you "investigate" your own emotional intelligence.
This book, as the author notes, is not just for teens. I personally gained so much encouragement to get to the bottom of me in a much deeper motivation. In fact, I traveled back in my time to analyze my own teen experience and managed to appreciate my trials and resolve them from my present perspectives! Very healing.
The Chapters are cleverly lined up. For example, you first define exactly what emotional intelligence is and your "why" for you before you can possibly begin your repair and/or preparation of you.
Personally, I found chapter one to be great. Didn't know how much I cruise through my days in autopilot until I examined myself thoroughly.
"Tuning in" was huge. Learning to reacquaint me to me, and to actually like what I saw has been a work in progress for decades. I appreciated how she gently broke down the biology of emotions with spiritual work and science.
I think the very most important part of this book is how she teaches that in order to love yourself, you really need to understand others who challenge that. I have been most healed, by learning to wear the shoes of those who make me emotional. That is a tough and wonderful insight that we humans need to practice more. We are not perfect, nor are they. Damage is not unique to me. Perhaps I can empathize and meet them in the healing waters together if I choose to.
A teen would best enjoy the brain dump exercises and takeaways that highlight and solidify what was taught at the end of each chapter. Very useful.
Now, as I said, it's a primer. Sarah could probably write volumes about specific techniques, but to keep a teen focused you really needed to keep it concise. She does encourage breathwork, meditation, exercise, and so on, but it would be a much larger read if she specified the Wim Hof breathing techniques, or Kundalini yoga practice's. Sarah suggests many authors and sites clearly her material if you hopefully wish to dig deeper.
I like Sarah's writing. She is a kindred sister and natural guide to the path of true freedom that is available to us, by us. You only have to be brave enough to face you.
Own Your Own Mind is helping me be a better husband, father, son, and friend. I hope and pray that this is only the beginning to a series of works that she offers.
Thanks Sarah!
Eternally grateful
