Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. The guy's aggressive yet wary, in the way men frightened for their marriages always are. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. A job's a job, after all.

Somewhat rambling
Revisado: 06-09-20
The suspect becomes clear fairly early, but what crime he has committed remains a mystery almost to the end. Maybe too many scenes that don’t move the acrion. Susan‘s “I have a Harvard PhD“ gets overworked, for example but at one point she does contribute physically to her own rescue

Complex love affair and drug trafficking
Revisado: 08-07-18
Spencer is stumped for quite a while trying to untangle the web of romantic jealousies and betrayals that underlie the drug trafficking in Boston.

Narrator is NOT Spenser!
Revisado: 05-21-18
The narrator does not give a performance--though few do. But the worst part (not his fault) is that I can in no way picture Spenser in the personality of the narrator's once.

The most dangerous man to cross is one who isn't afraid to die. But the most deadly is one who doesn't want to live. And Spenser has just lost the woman who made life his number-one priority. So when a religious sect kidnaps a pretty young dancer, no death threat can make Spenser cut and run. Now a hit man's bullet is wearing Spenser's name. But Boston's big boys don't know Spenser's ready and willing to meet death more than halfway.

Big chase one of the best; love stories painfully genuine
Revisado: 02-21-18
Final scene flips expectations without enough foreshadowing. Some of Spenser's meditations get long winded and repetitive. Hawk is surprisingly ineffectual. So Parker seems to have been playing with playing against expectations. In spite of that it's a good read and interesting to see a different woman react to him as a lover.

Historia
In January 2007 two young stoners from Miami Beach - one a ninth-grade dropout, the other a licensed masseur - won a $300 million Department of Defense contract to supply ammunition to the Afghanistan military. Incredibly, instead of fulfilling the order with high-quality arms, Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz - the dudes - bought cheap Communist-style surplus ammunition from Balkan gunrunners.

And amazing and still timely exposure of not only how the military is forced to circumvent laws made obsolete by changing alliances, but also how the press will deliberately twist a story to heighten victimization—even the NYT.

Rather a gem.
Revisado: 02-07-18
Wonderfully read story which includes a devastating satire on the casually wielded power of the press as it existed up until a couple of generations ago. Plenty of satire of lawyers and government officials as well. But it is in the characters and what money does to skew conscience that the story hinges.

Historia
Webster's Dictionary gives the meaning of the word "miasma" as "an infection floating in the air; a deadly exhalation". And in the opinion of Mr. Robert Ferguson, that description, though perhaps a little too flattering, on the whole summed up Master Roland Bean pretty satisfactorily. Until the previous day, Master Bean had served Mr. Ferguson in the capacity of office-boy. But there was that about Master Bean which made it practically impossible for anyone to employ him for long.

From the award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of The Monsters of Templeton, Arcadia, Florida and Matrix, an exhilarating novel about marriage, creativity, art, and perception. Fates and Furies is a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation. Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives.

I don't understand the glowing reviews
Revisado: 02-11-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who likes sentimental soap operas with sort of tragic endings.
What was most disappointing about Lauren Groff’s story?
The dialogue is banal. The story rests mostly on the pillars of meticulously ana;used sex scenes. The male character's suddenly revealed genius and unexplained success as a playwright are as unrealistic as his ending. The prose is without without distinction except for occasionally labored flights of imagery, but well-sprinkled with clichés.
Did Will Damron and Julia Whelan do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I guess they did as well as anyone could with the bland uniformity of the prose.
What character would you cut from Fates and Furies?
Both.
Any additional comments?
I was warned that the first half (the man's story) was pretty dull, but the second half (the woman's story) was really good. I confess that I was so put off by the first 60% that I just sampled the last part after having read a summary. Although the plot acquired more variety, the faults of prose and dialogue did not tempt me to slog through to the end.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Astounding voice actors
Revisado: 04-09-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Name of the Rose to be better than the print version?
Yes, actually. The vocal characterizations helps enormously in keeping track of the several personalities.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Name of the Rose?
The theological debates among the monks, which were quite authentic as I understand. Again hearing them dramatized added greatly to what might otherwise seem rather dry.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Hard to choose. They were all good.
