Blew me away!
Revisado: 04-18-25
Really loved this. It kept me hooked with its masterful story and the charters in it! Not my normal kind of listen other than I was looking in the thriller section. I know very little about the time period this takes place in, nor do I know what it is like to have to have a life like is in this. Yet I felt like I was right there. That I could feel these characters anger, fear, joy and sorrow. I highly recommend this book, and the second one. Now I am off to find more work boy this Author.

Great spice and story! Ick on the characters.
Revisado: 04-15-25
Enjoyable listen with some dark elements. Fabulous spooky season listen. Or any time if you are like me and love halloween all year long. Definitely check the trigger warnings. This is not a meet cute type story. The boys in this are not particularly likeable with their misogynistic and abusive ways. This is a story that you have to suspend your beliefs in as to what healthy relationships are and should be. The FMC is billed as smart and strong, yet I did not find her to be. In fact I wasn’t really a fan of any of the characters. What kept me going is the story. With the duel timeline I was very curious as to what the boys had been sent to prison for/the FMC was to have done in that. You definitely have a thought that she didn’t do whatever they think she did before the reveal there. The FMC Erica is supposed to be this smart lady who has come into her own. Yet I feel that she was stupid.Lack of thought on if her decisions and actions were logical. Instead following her heart to the point of it getting her into trouble. Yet she wasn’t supposed to be that type of character.
MMC/FMC do not actually feel like they have much chemistry apart from the spice. While the spice is done very well, for 2 people that have been around each other their whole lives there is a lack of feeling that they actually know each other much at all. The narrators on this one did an great job of bringing the words to life. As I am sure that if I tried to read this rather than listen I wouldn't have been as involved in the storyline as I was. The duel POV was done justice by them.
Undecided if I will move on to the next book in the series and give the characters a chance to redeem themselves with a bit more character building.

Revisado: 04-12-25
I am sorry but the character development was lacking for me. Two strangers meet and fall into bed- next thing you know they are saying I love you. Yet they know so little of each other at that point. There is some spice but not enough to be classified as the type of book to get away with so little development before they are “in love”. It was a bit challenging to finish this story. Yet I was more interested in the MMC friends than the main couple for this book. After finished, saw this is a series. Unfortunately I am not interested enough to move on to book 2.

Carter Beckett is the NHL’s resident bad boy, top player both on the ice and in the bedroom, and quite possibly the sexiest man to ever grace my field of vision. But worst of all? He knows it. He’s arrogant, self-centered, and the man doesn’t seem to know what a filter is, let alone how to use one. He’s had everything served to him on a silver platter, including endless strings of women, and apparently, I’m up next. I have the solution to all my sexual frustrations in a drawer at home, and it’s far less complicated than Carter Beckett.

Refreshingly funny!
Revisado: 04-10-25
First, the voice acting was exceptional. The Canadian accent on the male voice added a unique and distinctive element to the narrative, particularly in a setting within this region.
Secondly, both the female and male protagonists were exceptionally well-written and humorous. Despite not initially anticipating an interest in the sports romance subgenre, I found myself thoroughly entertained by this story. The blurb did not initially pique my curiosity, but I decided to give it a chance with so many I know loving this genre. As a relatively new reader of sports romance literature, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and quality of this work.
The author’s remarkable ability to bring these characters to life made it effortless for the voice actors to embody their roles. As I listened to the audiobook, I was fully immersed in the story, forgetting that I was merely observing a fictional narrative. The characters were multi-dimensional and relatable, evoking both laughter and tears. While I cannot pinpoint which character elicited the most laughter, I found myself laughing throughout the book.
My sole critique is that the happy ending felt somewhat rushed. However, this can be forgiven given the existence of other books in the series, which I anticipate delving into in the future.
So get comfy, laugh roll your eyes and enjoy the tale of the MMC’s “Sword of Thunder” and the ego with it!

He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and has no desire to change his ways. Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job.

Historia
Running away from home at 17 wasn't easy. Let's face it, though, nothing before or in the ten years since has ever been easy for me. And I'm doing okay—sorta. I just need to keep scraping by, living under the radar. Staying out of people's way, off people's minds. When a man walks through my open patio door, stepping boldly into my home and my life, I should be scared, frightened, terrified. I must be more broken than I realized because I'm none of those things. I'm intrigued—and I'm wondering if the way to take control of my life is by giving in to him.

Yawn
Revisado: 04-07-25
If someone were to give me the highlights of this book- I would have assumed I would love it being a sucker for these types of books.
It didn’t really feel like Payton and Nero had any real chemistry. It felt forced and going through the motions of what is expected in a mafia romance. I really wanted to like this because it wasn’t a skinny Barbie type FMC. Yet there was very little to make the reader like her.
Payton is a survivor of abuse, likes dogs, and gave her virginity to Nero. That is about as many layers as she has. The fact that she didn’t learn any self defense or anything makes one question if she has only embraced the victim mentality as she has been hiding for so long yet done nothing to ensure if she was found that she wouldn’t be hauled back. No change of last name even. As it is very easy for Nero to track down her Moms boyfriend/her step Dad.

Spy Thriller done right!
Revisado: 03-23-25
Overall I really enjoyed this tale of Jessie who belongs to a group of ladies who take you on a non stop action ride in the pursuit of justice. This book also touches on the questions around true justice, whose view of it is correct? This is a YA friendly read, yet entertaining for all ages. I also liked the F/F romantic sub plot between Athena agents, it didn't feel forced or that it was the only thing that was normal in the world that was built. Despite the fact that their main objective seems to be fighting against the oppression and injustices on females. We need more strong female stories like this!

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

Unique!
Revisado: 03-22-25
I love a good tale with vampires, so this was right up my alley. Twilight fans, this is not your sparkly tale. This follows a few vampires who live on the fringe of human society. The twists and turns are interesting and keep you guessing. The author also did a fabulous job of narrating!
Joey tells you a snarky tale of how he became what he is, and how he has lived. The “kids” they run across and his and his community’s experience with them.
The author gives you a chance to stop with an ending that would be fulfilling to some. I finished until the end— while I was a little bewildered how the continuity would work, I was happy for the extra twist.

Hard but good!
Revisado: 03-22-25
Deadly Illusion (the first book) SPOILERS
First a thank you to the Author for writing this! As a survivor of DV this book was hard to get through. Thank you for only going through one mild cycle.
To everyone else, the author’s portrayal of the FMC thoughts accurately captures the complexities of the thoughts intelligent minds will do when presented with this situation. The FMC emotions often lead to circular thought patterns, causing her to misinterpret situations through a rose colored filter. While some may perceive her as lacking intelligence or strength, it is important to recognize that she was aware of the wrongdoing committed by Colton. Despite her mental acrobatics with him as her coach, she failed to process the situation correctly and returned to him as many often do. We as ladies almost have it ingrained in us to be silent instead of seeking outside support in these situations. Jenna displayed that perfectly, and the starting of the isolation process that happens. While I love the introduction of Damian as her friend and eventual love interest, this development felt more rushed than organic. Fortunately, Jenna had not endured a prolonged cycles of abuse and trauma bonding. Colton’s true nature had been revealed after months of being in the relationship, it would have had psychological implications for Jenna beyond the one nightmare. It is my belief the story could have benefited from incorporating healing elements that would have facilitated her HEA with Damian. While this may have been to keep pacing- it felt her only work at healing was learning some self defense. Where to actually fall in love with Damian she would have needed to learn to trust him, not just see that he appeared to be a good guy. Yet this is the beauty of fictional portrayals.
This is not a super spicy book thankfully, as it would not have fit with the story that was being told. There is some steam in the appropriate places. The world building and scenes are vivid and eloquently painted by this author. You will go on a journey of highs and lows with this FMC. The voice actor did a great job of making her voice softer in some of the situations where the FMC was hurting.
Fatal Cure (the second book)
Ok not going to give spoilers on this part of the review it is already a TLDR.
This is also set in the same Chicago as book 1, you will see Jenna and Damian briefly. Yet this follows detective Fallon on her journey. Buckle up, it will be hard to put this down! Kathy Lockheart really hits it out of the park with this one. An impossible seeming relationship that is gritty and true to both characters that highlights the struggle between right and wrong and the morally grey places in which many people live. Nothing is easy for this couple. I love the ending it feels true to the characters, even if I was a little confused in places. (Might be due to the late hour and no sleep.)
