William Hurt should keep his day job

This is the first time I’ve listened or read this book. Hurt’s timing and inflection was terrible, even when the text gave clues in italics and punctuation. I took to following along his narration with the book and confirmed it wasn’t me.

Perhaps I’m too far removed from Ernest’s (my 8th cousin) era to comprehend any greatness in this story. It does remind me of my young single military days in Europe, 55 years after this stories time. I remember them fondly but don’t see them as especially unique. Maybe that’s why the story feels like “that’s life” to me.

Important message shadowed by idol worship

I think this is a message not only black but white apologist America needs to hear. I don’t agree with the grand praise of Trump. Nor am I inclined to believe in god. However, the evidence available before and after the civil rights movement of the 1960s cannot be ignored. The culture of contradiction and non-conformity has led the black community to a place that can only violate the Constitution that worked to set them free. Success in America is not guaranteed, but the only way to success is through education and work. A shortcut in any endeavor is usually welcome. But if that shortcut is taken away, you must know the full route to your Destiination.

List Taleeb Starkes with Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams

My daughters are college students and try to be socially aware. Unfortunately, what dad says about social responsibility and equitable opportunity for everyone is coming from an unwoke white guy in his 50s.
Even excellent and data laden offerings by Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams, despite them being black themselves, fails to convince.
Perhaps (with fingers crossed), Mr Starkes spate of data and logic can find a seam. In any event, as I continue to lament the loss of Dr King, I am heartened to know the US hasn’t lost everyone under 50. Great book on an essential topic.

Maybe it's the story teller.

I think I may have enjoyed this book better if I read it myself. I enjoy a good Sci-Fi. the narrator did a fair job and I got used to his voice as the story went on. But he seemed uninspired and lacked variation between the characters and didn't very pitch and speed where I thought he should have.

Found Narration Monotonous

Though not without expression, the narrators tone seemed consistently matter of fact, as though trying to prove something to me through the statement of facts. The stories seemed rushed and without fluctuation in tone, speed or expression. As I have read much of Poe's work and found it enjoyable at a leisurely pace, I was surprised at how little I enjoyed listening to this particular performance. I would allow the possibility Mr. Duquenoy and I may be "separated by a common language" as he is British and I American, making me unaccustomed to and therefore uncomfortable with his inflection and pace.

Not quite Mockingbird but engaging.

Excellent historical tale.

Replete with detail. Reader took some time with which to get comfortable but settled in. I will probably get the hardcopy for reference.
