Great story – sophisticated plot
Revisado: 04-27-25
This is the fourth in the series and the last one and I was very sorry to see it end. A true spy thriller with a realistic plot and a happy ending. We have such safe and relatively peaceful lives compared to those that fought, including my father, in World War II.

Historia
Barnard’s Crossing, Massachusetts, is thriving. Every year, more young couples move to this cozy New England village to raise their families, and many of them join Rabbi David Small’s synagogue. But the town is jolted out of domestic tranquility when Ellsworth Jordon, the town selectman, is murdered. An outspoken anti-Semite, and one of the town’s richest and most powerful men, it seems like everyone had a reason to dislike Jordan. When he’s murdered, not even the rabbi is surprised.

Revisado: 04-09-25
This is the seventh and the series and Harry Kemelman keep them coming. Despite being 50 years old, I find the stories relevant. The characters are believable and I especially enjoy the descriptions of Judaism.

Historia
One of the most viewed paintings in American history, Custer's Last Fight, copied and distributed by Anheuser-Busch at a rate of more than two million copies a year, was destroyed in a fire at the 7th Cavalry Headquarters in Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1946. Or was it? When Charley Lee Stillwater dies of an apparent heart attack at the Wyoming Home for Soldiers & Sailors, Walt Longmire is called in to try and make sense of a piece of a painting and a Florsheim shoebox containing a million dollars, sending the good sheriff on the trail of a dangerous art heist.

Great story, the series continues!
Revisado: 10-26-24
Despite being 25 years old, this story is quite relevant. Wrapped up in a good plot in Israel, involving terrorist, spies, and police investigations, there is great dialogue and character development. It is only slightly dated, and I definitely recognize some of the characters.

Historia
The day before Yom Kippur, the synagogue sound system is on the blink, the floral arrangements are in disarray, and a member of Rabbi David Small’s congregation—in the Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing—is terribly concerned with how much a Torah weighs. The rabbi is determined not to let these mundane concerns ruin his day of prayer and contemplation. But the holiest day of the Jewish year is interrupted when a member of the congregation is found dead in his car.

Revisado: 10-06-24
I really enjoyed this second book in the series. A good mix of mystery, character interaction, and Jewish theology. Like the first book, 60 years later is not really dated. Looking forward to the third and the series. I also enjoy George Guidall as the narrator.

Historia
David Small is the new rabbi in the small Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing. Although he’d rather spend his days engaged in Torah study and theological debate, the daily chores of synagogue life are all-consuming—that is, until the day a nanny’s body is found on the rain-soaked asphalt of the temple’s parking lot.

Surprisingly, good story
Revisado: 09-28-24
I am a non-observant, cultural Jew, but I really enjoyed the description of Jewish life in a Boston suburb in the early 1960s. Considering the storage was written over 60 years ago it really wasn’t that dated. The plot was excellent and the mystery was not easy to solve, but there were some good clues.

Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?
