Historia
Haven’s Rock is a well-hidden town surrounded by forest. And it’s supposed to be, being that it’s a refuge for those who need to disappear. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton already feel at home in their new town, which reminds them of where they first met in Rockton. And while they know how to navigate the woods and its various dangers, other residents don’t. Which is why people aren't allowed to wander off alone.

Riveting story, well told.
Revisado: 10-17-24
Well written, deep characterizations, story with depth, people you care about, a mystery you want Casey to solve. I liked the ambiguity at the end, too. Cannot wait for the next Haven’s Rock installment!

Historia
While on a much needed camping vacation with her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, Casey hears a baby crying in the woods. The sound leads them to a tragic scene: a woman buried under the snow, murdered, a baby still alive in her arms. A town that doesn’t let anyone in under the age of 18, Rockton must take care of its youngest resident yet while solving another murder and finding out where the baby came from - and whether she's better off where she is.

Historia
Emma Wheeler desperately longs to be a screenwriter. She’s spent her life studying, obsessing over, and writing romantic comedies—good ones! That win contests! But she’s also been the sole caretaker for her kind-hearted dad, who needs full-time care. Now, when she gets a chance to re-write a script for famous screenwriter Charlie Yates—The Charlie Yates! Her personal writing god!—it’s a break too big to pass up.

A Rom-Com within a Rom-Com
Revisado: 07-06-24
Loved the story, narration, and the idea of it - talking a cynic into the value of love, when it’s much easier to be a cynic, to not go there. The last 2 chapters killed as in Katherine Center went there, fully, all out, with wisdom, convincing the reader if they’d forgotten, what is of value.
Patti Murin and Therese Plummer are my favorite readers, too.
I liked getting a bonus chapter, understood it was best left out of the story because it would’ve diluted the tension.
And I loved Katherine’s Afterward, mentioning all the books, saved stories and creatives who helped her with this story. 👏🏻

Historia
Edinburgh, 1869: Modern-day homicide detective Mallory Atkinson is adjusting to her new life in Victorian Scotland. Her employers know she’s not housemaid Catriona Mitchell—even though Mallory is in Catriona’s body—and Mallory is now officially an undertaker’s assistant. Dr. Duncan Gray moonlights as a medical examiner, and their latest case hits close to home. Men are dropping dead from a powerful poison, and all signs point to the grieving widows… the latest of which is Gray’s oldest sister. Poison is said to be a woman’s weapon, though Mallory has to wonder if it’s as simple as that.

The wistfulness of time traveling!
Revisado: 12-25-23
I loved the story. It had me til the end. I loved Duncan and Mallory’s relationship - their interactions, sharing knowledge, him taking her seriously in 1869, the sexual tension that isn’t named, but is there. So good. There is an unexpressed feeling of “if I’d only met you in my time,” which lurks throughout their conversations as they work together.
I liked the characters of Ayla, Anis, McCready, even Sarah. I haven’t seen the novel and book form, so I’m not sure how the two sisters names are spelled, BTW.
The narrator is excellent - the way she does each voice, captivating. I love the somber quality she gives to Duncan‘s voice and his pauses and I love how Mallory switches between her version of Scottish housemaid. and modern day Canadian.

Historia
Hidden behind back doors of bars and restaurants and theaters and shops all over New York City are shortcuts—secret passageways that allow you to jump through time and space to emerge in different parts of the city. No one knows where they came from, but there are rules—you can only travel through them one way and only at night. When Jean’s work friend Iggy introduces her to the shortcuts, it’s to help shorten her commute between her night shifts bartending and her work at an upscale bakery.

“Shortcuts” through time in NYC
Revisado: 06-22-23
When the protagonist learns she can take shortcuts through time by going through hidden portals (in places like a diner), this book gets very fun. She does it out of necessity - has several back-to-back jobs and can’t get to the later one on time until a friend shows her the workaround. The only hitch - one can’t go backwards through them or during daylight without potentially getting lost forever in the portal.
She has to find a way to search for a friend of hers who disappeared in between the portals without being engulfed herself.
