Historia
In 1919, Delano, Georgia, appoints its first chief of police. Honest and hardworking, the new chief is puzzled when young men start to disappear. But his investigation is ended by the fatal blast from a shotgun. Delano's second chief-of-police is no hero, yet he is also disturbed by what he sees in the missing-persons bulletins. In 1969, when Delano's third chief takes over, the unsolved disappearances still haunt the police files.

excellent, gripping!

I really enjoyed this one. I didn't expect a murder mystery, for some reason I thought from the sketch it was sort of sci-fi (duh), but no matter, it was wonderfully written and well plotted, and the narrator was excellent too. I loved every minute of it.
Highly recommended!

mixed feelings about this one
Revisado: 04-21-10
For some reason I thought it was sci-fi when I bought it. A few minutes into it and I thought 'uh oh gothic romance'. But it did grab me and I did enjoy it, although it was of course very predictable and I would have preferred a better ending. The narrator can't do voices, so everyone sounded the same, but she didn't irritate me. I will probably read some more from this author, mainly because I enjoy lighter material sometimes, and being immersed in a slower, less frantic world.

Historia
In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world.

very, very illuminating!
Revisado: 04-21-10
This was a facinating book, because for the first time I was able to understand the source of self-chatter and other symptoms of my left brain, as well as why I sometimes get the "at one with the universe" feelings that I now understand are coming from my right brain. What a gift the brain truly is, and what a wonderful book. The author's experience reminds me of Eckhardt Tolle's description of what happened to him in his first book's preface; he may have gone through a mild version of this type of stroke.

Historia
During a perfect spring evening on Nantucket, a violent storm erupts and a dome of crawling, colored fire blankets the island. When the howling winds subside and the night skies clear, the stars appear to have shifted. The mainland has become a wilderness of unbroken forest, where tools of bronze and stone litter the beaches, and primitive natives scatter in terror.

Loved this first book in the series...BUT:
Revisado: 05-21-09
I was totally hooked into this one, 25 hours of pure bliss, I couldn't get enough. Absolutely great writing, great narration, loved the plot lines, etc. BUT - of course I bought the rest of the series, "Against the Tide of Years" and "On the Oceans of Eternity" - and they were a lot harder for me to finish. This story did not need to be spread out as long as this, and the plot lines got very threadbare and bedraggled by the last 20 hours or so. The characters I originally met in "Island.." starting taking back seats or disappearing altogether. The bad guy from the island (Walker) is not around much in the 2nd book and disposed of in a very unsatifying way in the 3rd, and really most of the 2nd and the entire 3rd is just a waste of time, IMHO. Consider yourself warned - if you get bored in the middle of #2, you can just quit and you won't miss anything.

Pretty good!
Revisado: 05-04-09
I had a hard time getting into it because of so much digression into Slavic language issues, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it became very good. The characters were likable and the narrators were excellent. Orson Scott Card's writing has always seemed sort of 'off' to me, a peculiar sort of parallel-universe mind-set. I like some of his stuff and hate some of his stuff. Not sure how his rabid fans would like this one, but I enjoyed it.

One of the best sci fi sagas ever written
Revisado: 10-19-08
Each and every book in this 7-book series has been totally engrossing. The writing style, the never-ending imagination, the characters, settings - just totally top-notch. I have to give the narrator credit for juggling multiple characters each with their own voice, and multiple races each with their own dialect. The only choice that threw me was using a British accent for the Ildirins...I would have thought a Chinese accent would have been more appropriate, given the nature of the race. I liked the guy who did the first 3 books better, but really not a big deal - the story just sucks you in so completely, it's all ok. YOU JUST CAN'T MISS THIS SERIES!!!!

The Torus is the most expensive machine ever created by humankind, run by the world's most powerful supercomputer. It is the brainchild of Nobel Laureate William North Hazelius. Will the Torus divulge the mysteries of the creation of the universe? Or will it, as some predict, suck the earth into a mini black hole? Or is the Torus a Satanic attempt, as a powerful televangelist decries, to challenge God Almighty on the very throne of Heaven? Twelve scientists under the leadership of Hazelius are sent to the remote mountain to turn it on.

I thought this was a great action book, extremely entertaining and interesting. I'm surprised at some of the negative reviews - although I suppose the book would be pretty offensive to fundamentalist Christians.
I thought the characterizations were just right, not too little, not too much for an action book. I only wish he had extended the end a bit more, and tied up some loose ends - what happened to the televangelist they jailed, and what were Kate's 2 missing years all about?
This plot brings up some very disturbing facts about human nature, whether you worship a traditional God or Science or ?? It's that pesky worship thing that seems to cause a LOT of trouble.
I LOVED this narrator, he was very skilled at subtly changing his voice for each character, and I thought he nailed the tone of the book perfectly.

My favorite of the Grand Tour series, and I love them all. Great narrator, thank heavens he has done most of Bova's books. This book has more stuff happening in it than you can shake a stick at. I never wanted it to end, I just wanted it to go on and on forever. I wanted to be there!
