Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

Historia
Communist China is ambitious. It wants to replace the United States as the world’s leading superpower. And it is well on its way. It is dominant in the world economy. It is a master at intellectual property theft. It shows strategic genius at cornering essential markets. It has been staggeringly successful in buying influence among American elites. And its military buildup is astonishing. So far, China has been waging a cold war on the United States and its Asian allies. But, emboldened by American weakness and decline, that cold war is about to turn hot.

Awful and weird
Revisado: 07-28-23
This book contains some weird jumps where you’re suddenly in a future fantasy version of the US that is inspired by China.
I thought this was a serious book about a serious subject but while the subject is serious this book is at times absurd. There must be way better sources on the subject than this.
Definitely going for a refund if that’s still possible.

Historia
DCI Adam Bishop has never seen anything like it. Five murder victims – all with numbers written above. And the spray-painted daubs reveal a horrific truth: the killer is counting down. When Dr Romilly Cole learns of the murders, they trigger memories of a traumatic past she has tried hard to forget. But getting involved with the case is a bad idea. She and Bishop have history – and working together could never end well. Adam and Romilly soon realise the truth lies in a decades-old case, and only Romilly holds the key.

Really good but very dark
Revisado: 07-03-23
There are parts that are difficult to listen to. It’s dark, like the first book, perhaps even a bit darker.
Also, like the first book, it’s an exciting serial killer thriller.
At the time of this review, I am eagerly awaiting the third installment.

Grizzly and great
Revisado: 07-01-23
It’s very grim and graphic at times, but it’s also a really exciting murder mystery.
If you enjoy serial killer thrillers and you can stomach graphic violence and truly depraved villains then this is a rock solid pick. Very good but also very nasty.

Historia
Russia's 2022 attack on Ukraine saw confrontation between Moscow and the West spill over into open conflict once again. But Russia has also been waging a clandestine war against the West for decades. Hostile acts abroad, from poisoning dissidents to shooting down airliners, interfering in elections, spying, hacking, and murdering, have long seemed to be the Kremlin's daily business. But what is it all for? Why does Russia consistently behave like this? Keir Giles explains how and why Russia pushes for more power and influence wherever it can reach, far beyond Ukraine.

It’s a privilege to read something like this from a true expert. The narration is excellent and the content is interesting from start to finish. This book really delivers on the subject matter. Listening to this in mid 2023, it feels like everyone should be required to hear/read this.

Historia
In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI, are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman - and he’s playing games with them.

Once you get into it it’s brilliant. The atmosphere is superb. Parts of this book are some of the most enjoyable storytelling I’ve ever come across. Loved a lot of it. Best credit spent in a very long time.

Solid stuff, original yet familiar
Revisado: 03-09-23
Be prepared, it’s horror and comedy, not comedic horror. The horror is genuinely dark and scary and the comedy is funny. The horror isn’t funny and the comedy doesn’t intervene and defuse the horror. It’s not as lighthearted as I was expecting.
I really enjoyed it. It is very well executed. Very modern in many ways but with a strong 80s heart to it. Brilliant!
I am definitely going to seek out more by the same author, Grady Hendrix.

Solid 40K
Revisado: 01-26-23
I enjoyed it. It’s got some nice characters in it and some good action and history.
It’s good 40K and that’s good enough. It’s not the best 40K, but it’s better than a lot of other 40K.
I would recommend it to most fans of 40K and the Imperium.

A well told but absurd story
Revisado: 09-16-22
****POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT****
It's almost like a parody.
Narration is good, writing is good, main characters are pretty cool, starts off pretty good but the story itself ends up like a hardcore caricature. This book is unique in the sense that it takes essentially every possible trope "shocker" answer teased to the mystery and then goes "all of the above". :D
I think I might try book two in the series, because I feel like maybe this first book exhausted the possibilities for being silly and so number two will actually be good. If it did not exhaust the silliness, I will be genuinely impressed, so either way it's bound to be a win. ;)

Best sci-fi in a long time!
Revisado: 07-21-18
If you like the original Star Wars movies, then you should get this series. This is the good stuff. It’s unapologetically entertaining and fast paced. It’s easily my favorite space books in a long time, maybe even of all time. It’s not hard sci-fi; it’s very Star Warsy, science fantasy. It’s better Star Wars than anything outside the original trilogy and maybe that caveat is just me being too fond of Star Wars. It’s neither deep, intellectual, philosophical nor boring.
It’s modern pulp and it’s all about entertainment. It’s not about telling anyone anything other than an action packed space story full of awesome images and colorful characters. It’s not really original; it’s more like cherry picking goodies from other stuff and mixing it together... and this is one of the cases where it works. :)
