Historia
Chris Harman describes the shape and course of human history as a narrative of ordinary people forming and re-forming complex societies in pursuit of common human goals. Interacting with the forces of technological change as well as the impact of powerful individuals and revolutionary ideas, these societies have engendered events familiar to every schoolchild-from the empires of antiquity to the world wars of the 20th century. In a bravura conclusion, Chris Harman exposes the reductive complacency of contemporary capitalism.

Audiobook version is painful!
Revisado: 02-11-24
Reading and listening to this book are two wholly different experiences. The narrator’s voice is the most affected and pretentious-sounding voice I’ve ever heard. And I like English accents! But this guy … like nails on a chalkboard. I cannot finish it.

Historia
Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you. Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a b*tch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL.

Her narration
Revisado: 02-10-24
I’m not a big fan of audiobooks. Most narration is so affected … and then when they mispronounce a word or a name, I wanna crawl out of my skin. (Aaargh! Stop trying to sound like you’re the smartest person in the room!!) But I do like autobiographies and memoirs when performed by the writer. They’re telling you the story - not “narrating”/reading it.
Leslie Jones is such a natural storyteller, this doesn’t even sound like a book. She’s not “narrating” - she’s talking. Like she’s sitting in the room with you and explaining herself. And she’s so into it and so real, it’s exhausting at times! Other times, when I was listening to her at night, I’d get so keyed up right along with her that I had a hard time going to sleep.
And she’s got quite a story to tell. I enjoyed her on SNL and Our Flag Means Death. After listening to her book I admire her, too. She’s been through a lot - really, a WHOLE lot. That she still has so much enthusiasm for life is amazing and wonderful.

Historia
The Easy Life is the story of Francine Veyrenattes, a twenty-five-year-old woman who already feels like life is passing her by. After witnessing a series of tragedies on her family farm, she alternates between intense grief and staggering boredom as she discovers a curious detachment in herself, an inability to navigate the world as others do. Hoping to be cleansed of whatever ails her, she travels to the coast to visit the sea. But there she finds herself unraveling, uncertain of what is inside her.

Wow, I loved it

Only if you love Duras is this audio version bearable
Revisado: 12-24-23
Translation is almost as painful as the performance. The occasional faux French accent is annoying and even sounds mocking.
If you can, read it in the original French. Not Duras’ best work, but still good. Like Edith Wharton transplanted in the Occitane 40 years later.
But do not waste your time on this English audio version. It’s cringe. Very.

Historia
Deep within the bayous and swamps of Louisiana resides a population descended from an exodus. These people, called Cajuns or Acadians, were expelled from their homelands. Persecuted and homeless, they traveled hundreds of miles south in search of a new home and ultimately settled in the Pelican State, where they made new lives for themselves free from their British conquerors. Though not always warmly welcomed, they were accepted, allowing them to practice their different culture amid their new neighbors.

Boring overview

Does not do justice to the history of the Acadian people. I could have put this together myself in an afternoon with an encyclopedia and the voice recorder on my iPhone.
