The narration is horrible
Revisado: 10-03-23
The narrator was difrected to use a lot of gravel in his voice but he cant always carry it off. He has a really nice baritone voice to begin with but unfortunately he wasnt always allowed to use it. A little gravel goes a long way. This book has way too much.

Why cant they leave Richard Ferrone alone?
Revisado: 04-24-22
If you have listened to other Prey series books, you will know that Ferrone doesn't need any directing to enhance his performance. His rich baritone voice is perfect just like it is. For reference listen to Certain, Easy or Mortal Prey. I had to return this book because the scratchy, gravelly effect he had to adopt was just a bit too much. I returned Ocean and Golden Prey for the same reason. Too bad, I hate missing out on Lucas novels.

It sounds like Gamache has laryngitis making it unpleasant when his part is read. The past narrative performances were perfect why change now?

Narrator is unsteady
Revisado: 10-15-19
The narrator starts out great but varies his style thru out the book. At times his voice is very breathy and scratchy. Other times his voice is solid and well enunciated. Not the 'voices' of characters but during the descriptions. It is really annoying. The story itself can be a little tedious. How many visions of Sandy do you need?

Historia
When Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth hears reports of a haunted castle near Drim, he assumes the eerie noises and lights reported by the villagers are just local teenagers going there to smoke pot or, worse, inject themselves with drugs. Still, Hamish decides that he and his policeman, Charlie "Clumsy" Carson, will spend the night at the ruined castle to get to the bottom of the rumors once and for all. There's no sign of any ghost...but then Charlie disappears through the floor. It turns out he's fallen into the cellar. And what Hamish and Charlie find there is worse than a ghost.

What did you love best about Death of a Ghost?
Great Hamish novel with new characters and a fresh story line. Mr. Malcolm is, as always, one of the best narrators in the business.
Have you listened to any of Graeme Malcolm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have never heard a bad performance from Mr. Malcolm. He and George Guidall should give lessons to other narrators.

Historia
After the events in Gathering Prey, Lucas Davenport finds himself in a very unusual situation - no longer employed by the Minnesota BCA. His friend, the governor, is just cranking up a presidential campaign, though, and he invites Lucas to come along as part of his campaign staff. "Should be fun!" he says, and it kind of is - until they find they have a shadow: an armed man intent on killing the governor...and anyone who gets in the way.

Narration is very disapointing.
Revisado: 04-27-16
Would you try another book from John Sandford and/or Richard Ferrone?
I have all the Davenport books and was really anticipating this one. I have been listening for about two hours even though the book has been running for over three. I would have never fallen asleeo while reading Certain Prey or Invisible Prey
What could John Sandford have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I miss Del, Shrake and all the others. Maybe they will show up later.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Richard Ferrone?
I wouldn't cast anyone other than Richard Ferrone, I would just make sure he was completely recovered from his strep throat before he began reading the book. Just kidding. Mr. Ferrone is under the direction of someone (possibly someone who is hearing impaired) just like an actor is in a movie. The director needs to understand that Ferrone's deepest gravelly voice is best used for characters more than reading the non-speaking parts. Gathering Prey was much the same way. Maybe the director from Certain Prey will return, that's my favorite performance.
Any additional comments?
I hope they get a different for the next Davenport novel.

What did you love best about Gathering Prey?
The unusual storyline.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes. Richard Ferrone is the only narrator for the Prey series. This time however the gravel in his voice was a little much. He sounds like he has a sore throat and needs to clear it. A little more breathy than usual too.

Predictible and a little boring
Revisado: 01-01-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Less predictable plot twists and situations. It seemed to me that Mr. Hurley was on auto-pilot when he wrote this one.
Would you ever listen to anything by Graham Hurley again?
Possibly. I think his novels are much better when he hoses an audience and writes for them, such as mystery readers or social issue readers or alternative life-style readers but not all. I know characters need dimension but too much dimension just leaves them flat.
What does Jonathan Keeble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Jonathan Keeble is always fabulous. One of my most favorite Jonathan Keeble performances is: A Cure For All Diseases by Reginald Hill.,
What character would you cut from The Order of Things?

Revisado: 11-09-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Behind the Scenes at the Museum is one of my favorite books. Life After Life I didn't get past the fourth chapter. A God in Ruins is somewhere in the middle. It is okay but some of the characters are a little flat. Personally, I just want Brodie back, The narrator is great.

Historia
When therapist Jill Davent moved to the village of Carsely, Agatha Raisin was not a fan. Not only was this therapist romancing Agatha's ex-husband, she dug up details of Agatha's not-too-glamorous origins. Jill also counsels a woman, Gwen Simple, that Agatha firmly believes assisted her son in some grisly murders, although there is no proof. Not one to keep her feelings to herself, Agatha tells anyone who will listen that Jill is a charlatan and better off dead.

Story-time for the kiddies!!

Would you try another book from M. C. Beaton and/or Alison Larkin?
I felt like I had walked in on a story time for the kiddies. This narrator should stick to The Three Bears or Cinderella. Sickly sweet with the fake lisp. Where is Penelope?
What was most disappointing about M. C. Beaton’s story?
Saccharin narration.
