Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

DO NOT remember the story from high school, thought I know I read it. It was more than captivating. A scary model of the human mind, society and relationships. Worth the time.

Historia
This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than 50 conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

depressing
Revisado: 12-03-10
It may be true and it may show many interesting things about survival that I will never hear. It was just so darn depressing to hear; I was unsure it was worth it and gave up after an hour or so. If you like true misery..have a listen. Sorry I wasted the credits on this one.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

just ok
Revisado: 11-19-10
The details of the character's lives almost seemed to be added to make more of the story that there was.
Focusing on only one family probably could not do justice to the hardships for Japanese Americans at this point in our history. It was a sweet and predictable love story, however, there were times when I was ready to unplug and move on. I stuck with it for the satisfaction of the very predictable and sappy ending.

waste of time
Revisado: 10-15-10
Started out interested in the NY City backdrop, however this reads like reality TV of the 20's. Uninteresting details about recognizably important folk; none the less Boring! Narrator was equally dull. Don't waste your time unless you are addicted to inconsequential drivel. A true waste of audible credits.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

wonderfully told story
Revisado: 10-12-10
Great view into life in China at the turn of the century; the way values change through time. Great narration. Really enjoyed the story and became attached to all the main characters. Loved following the family through the decades. I'm sure I read this in High School, but this time, the story was more appreciated.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Just a bit more to go till the end; will be sorry when its over. Just a good story, nothing more. This is one listen I have continued after the car ride was over. Snuggled under the covers with this one. The family struggles represent so many moments and feelings with which I can connect. Great narration.

In this simple, beautifully written book, David Michie opens the door to the core teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. With wry, self-deprecating humour, he shows us how he began to incorporate Buddhist practices into his daily life. He explains how he came to understand the difference between the temporary pleasures of ordinary life, and the profound sense of well-being and heart-felt serenity that comes from connecting with our inner nature.

Revisado: 04-03-10
The story unfolds with a lot of medical detail, but that does not detract from the character development or the engaging story line. I loved all the characters and though it was many hours long, I am happy I listened!!!!More than a few surprises in this one....good narrator!
