Historia
From the political propaganda of the Bayeux Tapestry, World War I soldiers coping with PTSD, and the maps sewn by schoolgirls in the New World, to the AIDS quilt, Hmong story clothes, and pink pussyhats, women and men have used the language of sewing to make their voices heard, even in the most desperate of circumstances. Threads of Life is a chronicle of identity, protest, memory, power, and politics told through the stories of needlework.

If you sew you know
Revisado: 03-25-25
This scholarly celebration of needle arts, particularly embroidery, covers the globe. While centered in the author's home territory of Scotland she explores textile traditions from China and SouthEast Asia to Africa to Central and South America and the heartland of the United States.
The narrator's perfectly paced performance is easy listening.
The narration faded toward the end but that may have been my device.

Dreamy fantasy stories have actually been a trend. They’ve inspired millions. As opposed to the lengthy novels, these stories are short but cut to the chase in an instant. They light up the weird and the uncanny, the marvelous as well as the fantastic: All the things we know are going beyond the reasonable and instantly realistic - into looking-glass, beyond the songs of the impossibly haunting violin, with the twisted trees of the ancient timbers.

dead narrator, childishly written stories
Revisado: 09-06-24
A different narrator might have improved this audiobook but I doubt it. These stories used odd words choices that had me wondering if the author was ESL or AI. Maybe the author was trying to convey a sense of a different culture through their words choices, it didn't work. The stories felt like teenage work. The sort passed around among friends who loved it. I was clearly not the intended audience.

Historia
My name is Hope Arden, and you won't know who I am. But we've met before—a thousand times. It started when I was 16 years old. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit, you will never remember who I am. That makes my life difficult. It also makes me dangerous. The Sudden Appearance of Hope is a riveting and heartbreaking exploration of identity and existence, about a forgotten girl whose story will stay with you forever.

Although sometimes I felt like the word count was being padded out by repetition and by technical descriptions I was still entranced by the story and its protagonist.

Historia
A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated - and sinister - than Special Agent A. X. L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward, Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton.

So disappointed
Revisado: 04-12-16
Reviving dead characters has become as cliche as reworking old TV shows, remaking old movies and rebooting vintage media blockbusters. I was so disappointed. I've come to expect more from the Pendergast series.

Historia
I am not the sort of person about whom stories are told. And so begins Elise Dalriss's story. When she hears her great-granddaughter recount a minstrel's tale about a beautiful princess asleep in a tower, it pushes open a door to the past, a door Elise has long kept locked. For Elise was the companion to the real princess who slumbered-and she is the only one left who knows what actually happened so many years ago. Her story unveils a labyrinth where secrets connect to an inconceivable evil. As only Elise understands all too well, the truth is no fairy tale...

Loved it right up to the end
Revisado: 03-12-14
This re-envisioned telling of Sleeping Beauty satisfied both my need for depth in details and well done characters. Only the end, while the logical conclusion given the characters, felt like a let down. Perhaps it is just a matter of too much happy ending and not enough fulfillment of duty for my Puritanical soul.

Historia
The Return of the King is the towering climax to J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy that tells the saga of the hobbits of Middle-earth and the great War of the Rings. In this concluding volume, Frodo and Sam make a terrible journey to the heart of the Land of the Shadow in a final reckoning with the power of Sauron. In addition to narrating the prose passages, Rob Inglis sings the trilogy’s songs and poems a capella, using melodies composed by Inglis and Claudia Howard, the Recorded Books studio director.

How could I be disappointed?
Revisado: 06-16-13
Sigh. This reading of the Return of the King is from the 1980's editions which have been altered from the 1960's editions that I'm familiar with. While I'm certain that the changes made to the story were well meant they are noticeable and irritating. I would appreciate it if , in the future, Audible would note the edition of the story that is being presented, especially when there are significant differences between the editions.

Historia
In lower Manhattan, a charnel pit of horror is uncovered: the remains of 36 people murdered and gruesomely dismembered over 130 years ago by an unknown serial killer. Just as a museum archaeologist and an enigmatic FBI agent begin to unravel the clues to the killings, a fresh spree of copy-cat murders and surgical mutilation erupts around them. Mixing science and terror in a way only they can, Preston and Child deliver a novel that's as gruesome as it is enthralling.

Disappointed by this abbreviated version
Revisado: 10-02-12
What would have made The Cabinet of Curiosities better?
Music came in at odd moments and the first time it was almost loud enough to drown out the narrator. The abridging of the story was done well enough but I found I was unsatisfied as I had read the story in full 5 years ago.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I look forward to this story being narrated in an unabridged version.
