Historia
Dublin, Ireland 1915. Eighteen-year-old May Gallagher is beautiful but restless, and longs for the freedom to live her own life, to decide her own destiny. Mollycoddled as the only remaining child of middle-class parents in the suburbs, she sneaks out to the theatre when she can. She is mesmerised by the captivating actor Peter Cullen, and wishes she could enjoy a more bohemian life. The Great War is taking all the boys away, and the promise that it will all be over by Christmas is ringing more hollow with each passing month.

Good, but not great and quite old-fashioned.
Revisado: 12-14-24
This is a very well written book, the topics are interesting and appropriate for their time historically, and the characters are all likable. The ending was a huge disappointment and clearly was designed to hook the reader to the next book. I didn’t care enough about any of it to do that. If you love, old-fashioned, somewhat long winded novels, you will love this. I gave it four stars for its potential audience and because it was a nice, easy, undemanding read.

Good, but predictable after 75% of the book
Revisado: 07-01-24
The narration was excellent.
The story was very good, but I figured out what it happened 3/4 of the way through the book.
It would make a great movie if that one flaw could be written differently.

Historia
The year is 2013 and the Greenspans are the envy of Brookline, Massachusetts, an idyllic (and idealistic) suburb west of Boston. Scott Greenspan is a successful physician with his own cardiology practice. His wife, Deb, is a pillar of the community who spends her free time helping resettle refugees. Their daughter, Maya, works at a distinguished New York publishing house and their son, Gideon, is preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps. They are an exceptional family from an exceptional place, living in exceptional times.

A well written, rich, modern novel.
Revisado: 01-17-24
Andrew Ridker has written an intelligent, timely, well-plotted novel with characters I wanted to discover. I took one star away from the story as the themes here are fairly quotidian, and a little more drama wouldn’t have hurt. Despite that, I really enjoyed the writing, and admired his ability to capture dialogue from different points of view, no mean feat.
The audio was impeccably done.
Pacing, intonation and inflection spot on.

Boring and read in an annoying way.
Revisado: 12-18-23
I couldn’t bear listening to more than a quarter of this book.
I’ve begun to think there are a lot of people who want mediocre television in book form.
Apparently, they’re spoiled for choice as that seems to be a lot of modern American fiction.
No diss, just not for me.

To Ryusei, a fellow student at Waseda; Chie, Miwako's best friend; and Fumi, Ryusei's older sister, Miwako was more than the blunt, no-nonsense person she projected to the world. Didn’t hold my interest, though well done.
Revisado: 09-09-23
I quit this book after three hours.
While the story is good, and the characters sweet, the mystery wasn’t enticing enough to me, and the characters not compelling.
If I were a young Japanese person, I might find this book fabulous. If I taught younger people, I might also find it interesting.
if I had a particular affinity for Japanese culture, I would’ve found it more captivating.
It’s possible that at this stage of my life, a well-seasoned adult, I seek things with multi-dimensional, complex characters.
These young people have depth, they just don’t have decades of experience.

Historia
DCI Monkia Paniatowski has seen dozens of murder victims in her time, but nothing could have prepared her for the corpse in the woods. It is not so much that the man’s throat has been slashed that shocks her, nor even the way he is naked – it is the way he has been carefully posed. Paniatowski has been assigned a new sergeant, who she does not entirely trust. Worse yet, an old enemy from the secret service announces he will be monitoring her every move.

Missable
Revisado: 07-08-23
The plot has enough sub-plots to keep things interesting…until it gets to the animal cruelty in the last portion. If I had known this was the book’s big reveal, I never would have read it.
In addition, there is a subtle misogyny here. It’s not glaring or intrusive, but its subtlety is what makes it even more damaging because it’s under the radar. A couple of the male characters talk to the women in a condescending and demeaning way; and, the main character, Monica, asks her sergeant for his opinion on how she behaves in a certain situation. As if a man’s perspective is more valuable.
When I think about it, I think this book would have been more interesting if one of the people under Monica‘s command had been a woman, especially if she had been a woman, hiding her Oxford, high end education and not a man.
While I’m into minutiae of the book, the linguistic pedant in me does not respond well to the misuse of the word appraise for the word apprise. We appraise a piece of jewelry we apprise someone of a piece of information. The first time I heard it incorrectly used in this book I was going to let it pass, but the second time was simply too tempting to resist.
I won’t continue reading this series, because they weren’t that compelling or relatable.

Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Not the most amazing story, and one that has been thought of many times before, but still useful in this day and age when women are not allowed to have control over their own bodies.

Like eating candy instead of lunch
Revisado: 01-21-22
Just like eating candy instead of lunch, these books are delicious and appealing but ultimately not nutritious. What I mean is they are thin on the ground; ultimately, unsatisfying. The characters are perfectly likable but not particularly fleshed out. Whatever shadow side they might have is unrealistically faint.
The narration is very good, but the American accent is off.

Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

Literary, slow and worthwhile
Revisado: 11-27-21
Oh William!
Sometimes, I thought Ugh William! would have been a better title of this book.
It’s a bit of a slow read, but it’s really a disquisition into one’s relationship with oneself and others, especially intimate relationships.
The quotidian is grist for her mill and she grinds it until it’s a fine raw flour.
There are many themes in this book and a running commentary about the evolution of relationships over time. It also explores the damaging repercussions of secrets and how they usually come out in the end.
As I listened to some of the quite tedious, incredibly descriptive sections, I wondered whether it was God or the devil in the details.
Despite my having to be an incredibly patient reader, a skill I am not always famous for, this is a work of art. The slow, deliberate pace forces the reader to fully inhabit the novel and its characters.
If you’re looking for the next great thriller, go somewhere else. But if you’re looking for something that delves, sometimes too deeply, into the details and detritus of life and relationships, read it.
