Fell a Little Flat
Revisado: 12-10-23
A great story for a cup of coffee in the morning but not something that felt as thrilling as the first. The stakes were not raised high enough and the danger never hit like it did in the first novel, but it was an interesting read nonetheless.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Hilariously Human
Revisado: 05-16-23
Something that feels instinctively natural to read while having a piping hot mug of coffee. His writing style feels so natural, as if having a conversation at the dinner table with a loved one. I’ve recommended this to my mom and somehow as she’s been reading it’s helped us speak more of the passing of my grandmother (her mother). If you’re looking for something to chuckle and relate to on a human level, give this a try.

Great Performance & Ok Story
Revisado: 08-17-22
The reader gives a fantastic performance of the characters and has an enjoyable voice to listen to. The story is interesting and gives a really great buildup, however I feel that it fizzled toward the end. I kept looking at the time shocked that it was almost finished right when I felt it got to the best part. Hoping for a part 2 in the future.

Uneventful & Slow
Revisado: 01-10-20
A wonderful plot just not explored thoroughly. There’s no explanation and there’s no follow through. Could have been an amazing story, but fell very flat.
Great for young adults or teenagers, or someone wanting a soft-thrill novel.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

The Sparkler Is Unlit
Revisado: 09-17-19
The summery is what drew me in and ultimately ruined the whole story for me. I was expecting a much more radical storyline with more of King's emotional rollercoasters but was left with a little less than that. There were moments that had me on the edge of my seat, however, I was more often than not getting distracted and unable to stay focused. With other King novels, I'm persecuting myself if I fall behind on any minor details to prepare for any twists or to fully visualize the actions unfolding. "The Institute" felt too expected and a little too simple, which I thought was his intentions but was ultimately left with a lack luster ending.
I liked the plot of the story and the interesting details that were touched upon; however, I personally did not feel this was as thrilling as it could have been. That is not to say that there could be a sequel to this in the future to better explain more and add more chilling twists. Still a great story to read, however, do not prepare for a wild rollercoaster ride.

Intriguing and Bewildering
Revisado: 01-11-19
Stepping into a world totally changed from the present, with morals so outrageous yet not so far from what some religions teach, is incredible. Incredible in the way that it seem's completely absurd, however; Atwood gives us reassurances of these laws that almost seem to convince you, the reader, why they make sense. An America that turns away from the constitution seems improbable, but if veiled with the promise of returning to religious values, would it be that fictional? Story's of alternate societies have always caught my attention; a life that is so different from my own but on the same planet as the one I call my own is eerie. Who is to say that, if different circumstances had occurred, this could not have been our reality?
This is a first had account, a kind of autobiography, that tells the life of our narrator. Do not expect to be given details about the society or how it came to be; the reader knows only what the narrator knows. Atwood gives us an understanding of the society at the end of this story; however we still don't know the logistics. I am to understand that there is a second book to this that should fill us in more with this alternate America. Be rest assured, not a moment goes by that you will not be hungry for more information.
The teller of this story has incredible annunciation and is a wonderful voice actress. Her portrayal of emotion is beyond believable that it alarmed me as I was listening. I felt what the characters were feeling and I could understand what they were thinking. My only critique is that there were some trouble distinguishing some characters from others. Dane did not use much tone differentiation to help distinguish some characters, but if you pay attention, it may not be hard to know who is who.
This is a marvelous story about an America taken from its secular nature and turned into a "religious" perfection. Emotions of anger, confusion, sorrow, and intrigue will introduce itself to you with every chapter. Be prepared to step into a world, foretold in the past, that may not be too far away from our own future.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely
Revisado: 01-11-19
This is an absolute enthralling story of how one bad egg infects many. Be prepared for rollercoasters of anger and the overwhelming hunger for justice. Don't let the length of the story deter you from experiencing this fantastic story, just like every Stephen King novel, every sentence builds towards a wicked outcome. I personally will say that the ending of this story seemed cut short to me, as though there was not as much thought to it as there was to every other detail. When a villain gets what karma has coming for them is so satisfying to me, however; I felt left to be satisfied with only a drop on my tongue.
The narrator is especially gifted at crafting unique and spot on characters for every soul in this story. Stephen is known for allowing many to have lives that intertwine into each other that we, as the reader, only get to know for a short period or through the entirety of novel. Esparza does not revive old voices for those who have been lost in the story. Emotion is also a key quality for visualizing the actions and expressions of characters we can only see in our minds eye; Esparza does this with beautiful diction and artistically crafts every person uniquely. Of course, we can also say thank you to King for never leaving anything to interpretation when it comes to the universes he crafts in his story. I am from a small town myself and the actions that take place are all too familiar for me. This makes this story almost real for me, the reality that it is possible.
To those about to enter this world, prepare yourself for wrong becoming right and vulgarity to the finest and minute detail. Also, place yourself mentally into this town and grasp the substantial predicament that falls itself onto the characters (and figuratively) into yours as well. How would you respond in this situation? What would you do differently?
