Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

An important explanation of our times
Revisado: 04-13-25
Everyone should read or listen to ‘Careless People,’ whether you are a Facebook-user or not. Sarah Wynn-Williams traces her journey from social media idealism to well-informed disgust as the company she worked for became increasingly cynical, numbers-oriented, and, ultimately, downright inhumane and callous in its use of its power and authority. Her story should give every social media user pause, particularly if Facebook, X, and others are your sole source of news. Chapters on the failure of internet.org, 2016 election, and genocide in Myanmar—not to mention her own sexual harassment at the company—vividly make her point that these tech boys are not to be trusted.

Historia
In the aftermath of World War II, a succession of mass supernatural events swept through war-torn Germany. A messianic faith healer rose to extraordinary fame; enormous crowds traveled to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Most strikingly, scores of people accused their neighbors of witchcraft and found themselves in turn hauled into court in turn on charges of defamation, assault, and even murder.

Stunning story
Revisado: 11-27-24
Monica Black’s story of spiritual crisis in postwar Germany provides fascinating insights into irrationality in what is seemingly otherwise a modern—albeit deluded—nation. A compelling story well-told, although the narrator’s overemphasized German pronunciation is sometimes distracting.

Historia
How did four young men from a faded old seaport in Northern England lead such an epic musical and cultural revolution? Why could the story of the Beatles only have happened in such a charged decade? What remains to be said about this British band that hasn’t been said before? Questions like these lie at the beating heart of these 12 lessons that offer a fresh look at how this celebrated band became one of the most compelling voices against the status quo.

Context is Everything!
Revisado: 03-17-24
As a voracious reader of Beatlemania, I didn’t necessarily expect to learn anything new from this ‘Great Course.’ But Prof. Michael Shelden’s prodigious research and synthesis brings a new context to the careers of the four Liverpool musicians. Shelden emphasizes the significance of Brian Epstein and George R. Martin while not taking anything away from the ambition and musicianship of the Beatles. He does a nice job of drawing out the differences between the American and British reception of the band, with British loving the Beatles’ class subversion and the Americans appreciating their innocence and sense of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and highly recommend it, even if you think you know everything.

Historia
Ever since a childhood visit to Washington, DC, Cassidy Hutchinson aspired to serve her country in government. Raised in a working-class family with a military background, she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Despite having no ties to Washington, Hutchinson landed a vital position at the center of the Trump White House.

I cried
Revisado: 10-05-23
At numerous points in this book, I cried. Hutchinson is so candid about the process of her “enthrallment” and inevitable disappointment with a president who refused to play by the rules and respect constitutional norms, violating her core values. Her loyalty and desire to serve—not to mention her youth—created a gut-wrenching crisis for her: to speak up about what she had witnessed and experienced or stay silent and go along, the easier course of action. Hutchinson’s story is an object lesson for everyone about how insidious politics becomes when it stand for nothing but personal ambition. While she and I would not agree about a lot of issues, in the end she did the right thing, at enormous personal cost to her. I admire and appreciate her example in dark times.
