Historia
Isaac and David never thought they'd go back to the Amish world. But when Isaac's younger brother is stricken with cancer, they don't hesitate to return. Their relationship is on the rocks after insecurity and fear drove a wedge between them in San Francisco, and David is determined to make things right. Yet if they thought navigating "English" life was confusing, being back in Zebulon is even more complicated. Their families are desperate to bring them back into the fold, and pressure from the community builds.

Historia
“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

good advice
Revisado: 05-03-25
I really enjoyed this writing book. It was part memoir part craft book and all entertaining and informative. I loved that the audiobook was narrated by the author himself. It lended such a sense of authenticity to hear it coming from King directly.
The advice was good, especially because I am also not a plotter. The only part that felt odd and disconnected was his advice on shutting the door for 1-4 hours to write. Not practical for this lower middle class working mom and wife. It was nice that his wife has always been so supportive and reads his stuff. Again, not practical for me but it is nice to know some people have that kind of built in support system.
All in all, if you are an aspiring author, and you do not worship the save the cat method, this is a very helpful read.

mixed bag
Revisado: 05-03-25
3.75 ⭐ This book was a mixed bag and a bit slower to get through than the first two, but overall I've already bought into this series and will definitely keep reading it.
First I want to say how much I appreciate the wonderful and complex world RY built within this series. It truly is immersive and detailed and so real in my fantasy reader's minds eye.
My main issue with this book was pacing. It was slower to me than the previous two books. I think for me there are 2 primary roots to this problem:
The plot. It was kind of all over the place. I wasn't sure what was happening sometimes or what I was supposed to be anticipating. There was just too much and it wasn't as streamlined and tight as I'd have liked.
Too many characters. I think there is a reason many fantasy books are quests with a tight nit group, or feature creatures like dwarves or trolls who like to live away from people. The reality of Violet's life is logically that she will encounter lots of characters. And we did in this story, and it was so hard to keep up, and as a result, care about all these new characters.
I almost hope book 4 is Violet stranded on an island with only her dragons and closest friends.

Historia
Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface. She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they're both drawn to sad things. Which means they're drawn to each other. Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn't realize is that a rip current is coming, and it's about to drag her heart out to sea.

3.75⭐ This was fine as a contemporary MF romance. This was my 3rd CoHo book and I began to understand the appeal of her writing is heavily embedded in her character building. She really slams you over the head toward the beginning with lots of info dumping exposition, nice language but still telling not showing. Still I feel only people who understand the craft of writing a little more than the average reader would be bothered by the initial exposition. Good to know as an aspiring author what readers will overlook while still propelling a book to bestseller status.
I did feel there was a LOT of angst that very quickly and neatly resolved at the climax.
Perhaps I felt the end was too quick and easy simply because I am used to reading more angsty fantasy, sci-fi and queer romance, where there is often much more at stake naturally.
I did get overwhelmed with too much sappy sweetness and almost whiney heart tugging. But again, MF contemporary romances might generally be written this way so I guess if you are making the NYT bestseller list the sticky sweetness is not only allowed but also perhaps expected.
I might read another CoHo at some point, bur I need some pallette cleansing books before I can take another dive into the syrup of this genre.

literary fantasy
Revisado: 05-03-25
I did not enjoy this book. It felt like assigned reading in a university Contemporary lit class. This is a literary sprawling epic fantasy with dozens of characters, locations, and incredibly complex world building that was never really explained.
I'm assuming what makes this book so popular is the literary layers of complex language and metaphor. I get that stuff, but I don't enjoy it in books I read for pleasure. I felt similarly about The Poppy War, so if you enjoyed that book you'd probably love this one.
As an audiobook listener this was a terrible experience. Despite all the characters and multiple POVs, there is one narrator. She's ok, but I think it was a very poor choice to use one person for such a long, complex sprawling story. I can only assume that choice was made because of cost. If this was a self published book I could understand that but im pretty sure this is traditionally published and I feel there is no excuse not to at least have paid for one more narrator.
If you enjoy literary fiction you'll love this, but as for me I'm so glad this is over.

Big City is supposedly the place where dreams come true. As someone just trying to live my life, I can tell you it’s more like a recurring nightmare where dreams get c*ckblocked at every turn. Especially if you’re a supervillain like me. The irony is that I have zero powers, despite coming from purebred villain stock, but try telling that to Big City’s beloved hero, Captain Masculine.

5⭐! I loved every second of this book. I needed something good, lighthearted, funny and I didn't know i needed all that spice but yum😋! I'll take it. Brilliant rom com. Any story that pays proper homage to Rocky Horror is always an automatic win for me! Loved, loved, loved!
Oh, and that epilogue proposal???? I nearly died laughing as I drove to work. Audiobook narrator were also brilliant. Im adding John Solo to my all time fav male narrators now.
I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!

thoughtful sci fi
Revisado: 05-03-25
This was a little hard to digest. The perspective of the story, alternating between humans and spiders, distanced me as a reader at first. Also, as in the title, this story encompasses a long span of time. Therefore, there were some parts that the author just told. Like this generation did this, then three generations later that led to this. At times it reminded me of reading the Old Testament in the Christian Bible.
However, there was a point. By the end there was more action, balancing the paragraphs of reflection and observations on human behavior. It had strong themes and very good philosophical points. I particularly enjoyed the gender wars represented in the spider society.
If you have patience and can handle long books this is a good example of a literary sci-fi story.

He has the muscles of Adonis, an ego bigger than the sun, and a very clear desire to get back in my pants. Which would be fantastic if he weren't a SEAL and I wasn't a criminal. Although, I prefer the term avenger. I'm a hacktivist, cleaning up the cesspool of cyberspace one scam artist and troll at a time, and I sometimes bend a few rules to get justice done. He's a military man with abs of glory, sworn to uphold the letter of the law no matter its shortcomings. And if he'd known who - or what - I was, I doubt he would've banged me at my best friend's wedding reception.
