Historia
Spanning eras and cultures from ancient Rome to medieval England to 1950s Hollywood, Jennifer Wright's It Ended Badly guides you through the worst of the worst in historically bad breakups. In the throes of heartbreak, Emperor Nero had just about everyone he ever loved - from his old tutor to most of his friends - put to death. Oscar Wilde's lover, whom he went to jail for, abandoned him when faced with being cut off financially from his wealthy family.

Historia
Something unimaginable occurred from 1764 to 1767 in the remote highlands of south-central France. For three years, a real-life monster, or monsters, ravaged the region, slaughtering by some accounts more than 100 people, mostly women and children, and inflicting severe injuries upon many others.

Made It Half Way Through
Revisado: 04-18-25
This is not the fun and informative listen I'd hoped for. There are sections that are pretty much written as lists, which doesn't lend itself to an audio book format. There's flowery and obviously completely fictitious dialogue. But the thing that really made me give up was some absurdly lazy "research" that was presented through quotations. Jane Goodall is the world's foremost expert on primates, but shouldn't be your go-to source on wolf behavior. Then -- and I kid you not -- the author used the Webster's Dictionary definition of silver to describe the metal. That was the sentence that really did it and made me surrender. Don't waste your time.

Historia
Have you ever wished you could live in an earlier, more romantic era? Ladies, welcome to the 19th century, where there's arsenic in your face cream, a pot of cold pee sits under your bed, and all of your underwear is crotchless. (Why? Shush, dear. A lady doesn't question.) Unmentionable is your hilarious, scandalously honest (yet never crass) guide to the secrets of Victorian womanhood.

It's funny, engaging, and informative, but the exceptional narration really makes this book a gem. Upon finishing it, I promptly gifted a copy to a friend, as any proper young lady would.

Powerful & Infuriating
Revisado: 01-26-25
Well researched, well structured, and well written, this book evokes all sorts of emotions. Although upsetting in a variety of ways, it is an important collection of cases that illuminates serious and systemic corruption, bias, and downright stupidity in certain areas of the criminal justice system.

Historia
On the Alaska Peninsula, where exceptional landscapes are commonplace, a small river attracts attention far beyond its scale. Each year, from summer to early fall, brown bears and salmon gather at Brooks River to create one of North America's greatest wildlife spectacles. As the salmon leap from the cascade, dozens of bears are there to catch them, and thousands of people come to watch in person or on the National Park Service's popular Brooks Falls Bearcam. The Bears of Brooks Falls tells the story of this region and the bears that made it famous.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Historia
Written with an exciting combination of narrative flair and historical authority, this interpretation of the tragic life of Catherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, breaks new ground in our understanding of the very young woman who became queen at a time of unprecedented social and political tension and whose terrible errors in judgment quickly led her to the executioner's block.

Meandering
Revisado: 06-30-22
If this is your genre and if you love excessive detail, this book is for you. If you are not *extremely* into this era, don't do this to yourself. There is SO. MUCH. UNNECESSARY. CONTEXT. If this book were entirely focused on Catherine Howard, it would only be about four hours long. But the author seems to have poured all his extraordinarily detailed knowledge into this one piece, making it far less interesting and engaging than it could have, should have been.

Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Powerful & Engaging
Revisado: 07-20-21
This book was far more powerful and engaging than I could have imagined. It is well-researchered, beautifully written, and masterfully performed. This genre isn't my typical cup of tea, but goodness, I was eager to listen to every difficult, heartbreaking, frustrating, hopeful second of this. A few minutes into the epilogue, I decided I needed to own a print copy as well--it's scheduled to arrive this evening.
