Historia
Episode Thirteen takes them to every ghost hunter's holy grail: the Paranormal Research Foundation. This brooding, derelict mansion holds secrets and clues about bizarre experiments that took place there in the 1970s. It's also famously haunted, and the team hopes their scientific techniques and high tech gear will prove it. But as the house begins to reveal itself to them, proof of an afterlife might not be everything Matt dreamed of.

Works brilliantly as full audio production
Revisado: 07-06-24
This 'found footage'/ 'paranormal tv ghost hunting' premise works brilliantly as a full-cast production -- I disagree with the folks who would have preferred the normal single-reader audiobook, personally. In fact, I think this probably works best *as* an audiobook -- folks who also like paranormal podcasts (fictional podcasts a la 'Lovecraft Investigations', etc) should definitely check this out.

Historia
Tim and Abi have always been different from their peers. Precociously bright, they spend their evenings in their parents' attic discussing the macabre and unexplained, zealously re-reading books on folklore, hauntings and the supernatural. In particular, they are obsessed with photographs of ghostly apparitions and the mix of terror and delight they provoke in their otherwise boring and safe childhoods. But when Tim and Abi decide to fake a photo of a ghost to frighten an unpopular school friend, they set in motion a deadly and terrifying chain of events.

Deeply melancholy 'ghost' story
Revisado: 06-07-24
I loved this book -- my only complaint is that I felt it ended too abruptly or quickly -- I DEFINITELY would have liked to have spent more time in the world Maclean created and certainly more time in the aftermath of the events of the 1970s, without spoiling too much. A definite must-listen for literary ghost horror fans. Honestly he could have doubled the length of the book and I'd have been happy

incredibly fun
Revisado: 05-17-24
...this was beautifully plotted, I thought! The meticulous plotting was absolutely what elevated this beyond the usual genre fiction. Definitely an excellent escapist summer read with engaging characters, and I hope very much that the author has more thrillers in the works. I read that it's in development for tv and I look forward to seeing that.

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Witty, Original, VERY satisfying ending
Revisado: 04-26-24
I absolutely loved this! I'm new to this writer but will definitely follow her. White Lotus-esque family vacation from hell; very satisfying & original take on the gothic genre; and a BANGER of an ending. For anyone who's ever felt like the 'black sheep' of the family, the dynamics here might be uncomfortably familiar; that said, even when the author is skewering family politics there's still understanding and I think love. I don't think all great books should be adapted into limited series but this one DEFINITELY should be...

Historia
Holly Sherwin has been a struggling playwright for years, but now, after receiving a grant to develop her play Witching Night, she may finally be close to her big break. All she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. When she stumbles across Hill House on a weekend getaway upstate, she is immediately taken in by the mansion, nearly hidden outside a remote village. It’s enormous, old, and ever-so eerie—the perfect place to develop and rehearse her play.

Fantastic but -- wraps up too quickly
Revisado: 10-21-23
First -- Carol Monda is incredible as a narrator. I've loved her for the Elizabeth Hand Generation Loss series and she's so so so good here. I thought the concept & character-building here was terrific -- I especially love the device of the group gathered at Hill House to rehearse a play based on Witch of Edmonton (there needs to be more Jacobean drama everywhere, all the time) -- but felt that I definitely could have spent a much longer time in the world Hand built; I wanted more! The narrative wraps up a bit abruptly, too, I thought. I could have done with another few hours of development including more fleshing out of the Hill House backstory. WELL WELL worth it, though, despite this quibble, although be forewarned -- the sound design here is more immersive than the typical audiobook and the extra background sounds UNNERVED ME at times.

Best Strike novel so far
Revisado: 10-13-23
...This was terrific. I found The Inky Heart a bit of a slog on audible (all those online chats...!) but this was TERRIFIC -- the plotting was superb and above all the stakes of the investigation felt the highest so far out of all of the Strike novels. Without offering spoilers, the Big Bad was VERY VERY VERY BAD indeed and Robin in particular felt truly in danger at different moments. Narration was spot-on as always, with a special commendation for his realisation of the Pat character -- he's SO good at her voice.
