Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Voice made me crazy
Revisado: 10-13-22
I think the story is exceptional, but Owen sounds like a dork. Sorry, but I couldn’t keep listening and would rather read the novel on my own.

Historia
Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Worthwhile
Revisado: 12-05-20
Heald's oral interpretation of Dostoevsky's novel helped to keep me engaged when I felt the author was longwinded in character dialogue or narration. he has a pretty good repertoire of voices so sometimes I think the women sounded a bit weak. I appreciated the author's inclusion of the philosophies of crime, Nihilism, and tenets of the Christian faith. I found Sonya beautiful and transformative in her loving kindness; not many other characters are even close to likable. So glad that I listened to this recording and I look forward to viewing the book in film adaptations.

Encouraging Book
Revisado: 09-15-20
Byers' metaphors and similes of the human experience highlight the hope drive and tenacity we can achieve to the power of positive thinking. They are very encouraging. However, I believe there is more than the power within us; there is the mystery of God lovingly coaching us forward and strengthening us in the journey. Beautifully read.

Historia
In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Lovely fiction
Revisado: 07-05-20
Kidd combines her cultural understanding, imaginings, and personal vision of Jesus the Messiah in this fascinating first person story of Anna, wife of Jesus of Nazareth. I enjoyed the gripping plot and imagery. Traditionally conservative Christians may wonder why the author doesn't go as far as to allow Jesus to be the triune Son of God. Kidd includes the Spirit as the feminine Sophia, so why not enrich the tale with Anna's full realization of Jesus' godhead? It's Kidd's baby though, this book, but I would have liked to have seen that fulfilling choice.
