Really interesting until it turned to social agenda
Revisado: 06-07-23
I enjoyed the scientific lectures. Much more than I expected. Then it suddenly pivoted to the Author’s social agenda. Ok, but it was beyond a stretch to link it with the stated subject matter. Too bad

Historia
In Last Train to Texas, author Fred W. Frailey examines the workings behind the railroad industry and captures incredible true stories along the way. Come along with Frailey as he travels the world, one railroad at a time. Whether it's riding the Canadian Pacific Railway through a blizzard, witnessing a container train burglary in the Abo Canyon, or commemorating a poem to Limerick Junction in Dublin, Ireland, Frailey's journeys are rife with excitement and the occasional mishap.

A master iconoclast
Revisado: 04-08-23
Hard to meet anyone familiar with railroading in the last 40 years that hasn’t read Mr Frailey’s work. Candidly it strikes me he replaced my favorite “TRAIN’S columnist, so it took me a few years to get over my contempt. In true rail fashion, that was 10 years. My loss.
This work is a wonderful compendium of some of his favorite stories. The ones I already new had new life breathed in them Mr Thompson’s performance.

Historia
Sam Kleiner’s The Flying Tigers uncovers the hidden story of the group of young American men and women who crossed the Pacific before Pearl Harbor to risk their lives defending China. Led by legendary army pilot Claire Chennault, these men left behind an America still at peace in the summer of 1941 using false identities to travel across the Pacific to a run-down airbase in the jungles of Burma.

The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan. There’s no suggestion that this account is a critique by the vanquished: Natl Chinese and Japanese. It’s odd in histories on the Japanese theatre in WWII that you will find more non Japanese defending the actions of the Japanese military than you will Japanese. Perhaps because they are more aware of their history.
I found the book to be an enlightening recount outlining both the short history of the Father of the Tigers and the political situation in China prior to the war. I felt I had a sense of the people, their mission, challenges and victories. The toll the theatre had on their lives and a sense of the impact both pre and post Pearl Harbor. To me, the history and the brave souls, were reborn for us to appreciate their contributions.
The performance was clear and well meted. A valuable resource for a student of the era.

Historia
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 03-20-23
Overall, worth the time. I didn't anticipate this to be a thorough review of Danish life/society, so I wasn't disappointed as some others seem to be. Having taken a year in Germany from the US, I could relate. While I wish there was more content about making friends, the story does relate what can be a frustrating experience in any "new" country. The Author, like me, looking a lot like the average folks in the respective countries, found things went a lot smoother than it may for others. The reflection on Danish society and their traditions, celebrations and nuances made me feel as part of the experience. Congrats on that achievement.
My criticism would two fold: 1) What seems to be an entire chapter dedicated to singularly crediting Denmark for farm to table haute cuisine. 2) The seemingly mandatory swipes at the non socialist west in general and the US in particular. It's great that Denmark can focus on the fulfillment of the lives of their countrymen. They have the money for a good part because others are picking up the tab for defense.

Historia
When Robert D. Krebs joined the ranks of Southern Pacific Railroad in 1966, the industry had been in decline for decades, and the future of trains was in peril. Despite these obstacles, Krebs fell in love with the rugged, competitive business of railroads and was determined to overcome its resistance to change and put rail transportation back on track. Riding the Rails details Krebs' rise to a position of influence in the recovery of America's railroads and offers a unique insider's view into the boardrooms where executives and businessmen reimagined transportation in the US.

Whether a fan of railroads or business icons, a riveting read
Revisado: 12-27-22
The sort of depth, detail and insight one on the outside can rarely get a glimpse of, much less an introduction. A can’t put down walk along the epicenter of American rail transport.
A tremendous insight as to what can be done with an industry run by a business professional. Not a “professional railroader”, a business professional. Not a confused participant from a worthless related industry (read airlines), but a top business school graduate who learned from the bottom if management up.
The only curious note was the mistaken assessment of the potential for BNSF/CN.

Historia
For decades, Demi Moore has been synonymous with celebrity. From iconic film roles to high-profile relationships, Moore has never been far from the spotlight - or the headlines. Even as Demi was becoming the highest paid actress in Hollywood, however, she was always outrunning her past. Throughout her rise to fame and during some of the most pivotal moments of her life, Demi battled addiction, body image issues, and childhood trauma that would follow her for years - all while juggling a skyrocketing career and at times negative public perception.

A life lived (living)
Revisado: 12-27-22
You can’t say “a life well lived”, because, she intimates that it has not. But, it’s everyone else’s fault. Only in discussing her addictions does she not blame every pebble in the road on someone else. Even here, however, she glosses over the personal accountability.
And maybe it’s my failure of accountability for the value of my own time that I let this story ramble on and on.
I had to offer 3 stars for performance, even though it was a terrible story, one of the iconic actors of our time narrated it.
