Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Historia
Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is 24 years old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life.

Good Story-Poor Narration
Revisado: 06-01-24
Disliked reader to the point of almost abandoning the book. Her reading was child-like and her efforts at portraying various speakers terribly disappointing.
I don't know how accurate the writer's descriptions of 17century life but some of it felt a bit hokie.

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

The Best of the Best
Revisado: 08-19-23
I just finished listening to "Children of Ash and Elm" for the second time and I l still think it is one of the best histories of any group of people I have read.
Neil Price is an archeologist and brings that experience to bear while writing an extraordinarily inclusive and, in my mind, the definitive history of the Vikings available today. Every possible angle has been examined and researched. The writing is thoughtful, occasionally funny, and thoroughly well-told.
Add to this an amazing narrator, Samuel Roukin, and you've got an extraordinary package. Roukin never stumbles over even the most difficult names and places but renders them
perfectly in their native tongue. He reads like he's talking to a friend about something that greatly interests him. I will look for other works just to hear Roukin read.
Well worth the time for anyone interested in history even if Vikings are not your "thing. "

Historia
Between the eighth and eleventh centuries, the Vikings surged from their Scandinavian homeland to trade, raid and invade along the coasts of Europe. Their influence and expeditions extended from Newfoundland to Baghdad, their battles were as far-flung as Africa and the Arctic. But were they great seafarers or desperate outcasts, noble heathens or oafish pirates, the last pagans or the first of the modern Europeans?

I listened for 30 minutes and gave up. I can't comment on the quality of the book, but the narration was not up to par.
I recommend "Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings" by Neil Price. Samuel Roukin, the narrator, is extraordinary with his extraordinary. The book is a quite up to date and looks at the history of the Vikings from every possible angle.

Revisado: 03-06-23
If you have any interest in archaeology, ancient history, Italy, or Greece, you're going to love this course. The lecturer is fantastic. The material is engaging and well organized and presented. The "trips" to dig sites create the feeling of being right there on the site in the dirt.

Historia
When Hitler’s armies occupied Italy in 1943, they also seized control of mankind’s greatest cultural treasures. As they had done throughout Europe, the Nazis could now plunder the masterpieces of the Renaissance, the treasures of the Vatican, and the antiquities of the Roman Empire. On the eve of the Allied invasion, General Dwight Eisenhower empowered a new kind of soldier to protect these historic riches. In May 1944 two unlikely American heroes—artist Deane Keller and scholar Fred Hartt—embarked from Naples on the treasure hunt of a lifetime, tracking billions of dollars of missing art, including works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Titian, Caravaggio, and Botticelli.

Historia
In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave.

True story of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca
Revisado: 01-05-23
The almost unbelievable true story of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, conquistador, slave, prisoner, medicine man and visionary.
The author has clearly done his research among the Spanish archives. While mostly well told l, my impression was that there were times the story was weighted down with too much details and in other instances the author skipped over large chunks of time with a few sentences. Regardless this tragic story is fascinating.
Jonathan Davis' narration was, as always, superb.

Historia
In 1541, the brutal conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro and his well-born lieutenant Francisco Orellana set off from Quito in search of La Canela, South America's rumored Land of Cinnamon, and the fabled El Dorado, "the golden man". Driving an enormous retinue of mercenaries, enslaved natives, horses, hunting dogs, and other animals across the Andes, they watched their proud expedition begin to disintegrate even before they descended into the nightmarish jungle, following the course of a powerful river.

Untold story of the first would-be conquerors of the Amazon
Revisado: 01-02-23
A riveting story of conquest and exploration, Buddy Levy's River of Darkness tells the little known story of the earliest explorers of the Amazon river. With evidence based on the journals and reports of the earliest explorers, Levy provides an excellent accounting of the world encountered by Gonzalo Pissarro and his lieutenant Francisco Orellana, who led hundreds of Spanish troops from Quito to the mouth of the Amazon inflicting murder and mayhem on vulnerable tribes, and the eventual ruin of most of the conquistadors.
Jonathan Davis' narration adds depth and drama to the story. I will look for other works narrated by Mr. Davis.
