Who are we? How do scientists define Homo sapiens, and how does our species differ from the extinct hominins that came before us? In this accessible account palaeoarchaeologist Paul Pettitt shows how the latest scientific advances, especially in genetics, are revolutionizing our understanding of human evolution. Pettitt reveals the extraordinary story of how our ancestors adapted to unforgiving and relentlessly changing climates, leading to remarkable innovations in art, technology, and society that we are only now beginning to comprehend.

Excellent information. Well written.
Revisado: 03-05-25
Really enjoyed the way the information was presented but found the narrator a struggle. He seemed to be affecting an upper class accent by swallowing his consonants and mumbling at times. Even with a British Classical education I found this annoying.
I am getting tired of Audible’s choice of narrators and may return to reading.

Historia
Books about the origins of humanity dominate bestseller lists, while national newspapers present breathless accounts of new archaeological findings and speculate about what those findings tell us about our earliest ancestors. We are obsessed with prehistory—and, in this respect, our current era is no different from any other in the last three hundred years. In this coruscating work, acclaimed historian Stefanos Geroulanos demonstrates how claims about the earliest humans not only shaped Western intellectual culture, but gave rise to our modern world.

Was really anxious to hear what the author had to say and tried several times to keep listening but was defeated I felt like a child being read to by a teacher trying to make it sound interesting.

Australopithecines, dinosaurs, trilobites - such fossils conjure up images of lost worlds filled with vanished organisms. But in the full history of life, ancient animals, even the trilobites, form only the half-billion-year tip of a nearly four-billion-year iceberg. Andrew Knoll explores the deep history of life from its origins on a young planet to the incredible Cambrian explosion, presenting a compelling new explanation for the emergence of biological novelty.

Difficult to focus on the interesting fact due to the narrator trying to be an actor. His breathlessness and hissing ‘s’s was really irritating

But then a second letter appears, followed by a poisoned box of the judge's favorite chocolates, and he begins to fear for his life. Enter barrister and amateur detective Francis Pettigrew, a man who was once in love with Barber's wife and has never quite succeeded in his profession.

Boring
Revisado: 09-28-24
The writing is pedantic and dated and the story wanders along with little to hold the readers attention. If I had been reading a printed version I’d have thrown it away against a wall unable to read more. In the end I gave it another try but with the same result. I’d have given it fewer stars but was impressed with the vocabulary. The narrator was a poor choice as his slow reading as though to a child was irritating and furthered the boredom.

More historical stories for the poorly informed rather than a source of geological information and enlightenment. Very difficult to listen to the poor pronunciation without mentally correcting each one.

Good story badly told
Revisado: 12-15-22
Although the narrator is free from a strong accent he is difficult to listen to because of his jerky narration. He reads as if the book was written in phrases with a few complete sentences and his volume falls to the almost inaudible at times. I was anxious to learn from this book but had to struggle to complete even the second chapter. A narrator need not be an actor trying to make the telling more interesting when the author has already done than with excellent authorship.

Great story. Poor narration.
Revisado: 10-09-22
Why does narrator read only phrases and not complete sentences. ? He also needs instruction on how to pronounce Scottish place names such as Oban and Loch Lomond not to mention personal names such as Dairmid. Difficult to listen to without grinding teeth.
Author is an excellent observer of landscapes and the effects of climate changes on character development and behavior. Poor performance on this audible means I will have to buy the book.

When therapist Jill Davent moved to the village of Carsely, Agatha Raisin was not a fan. Not only was this therapist romancing Agatha's ex-husband, she dug up details of Agatha's not-too-glamorous origins. Jill also counsels a woman, Gwen Simple, that Agatha firmly believes assisted her son in some grisly murders, although there is no proof. Not one to keep her feelings to herself, Agatha tells anyone who will listen that Jill is a charlatan and better off dead.

After the discovery of an end-Cretaceous surge deposit in North Dakota, he was part of the team that pieced together the striking evidence it contained, particularly its perfectly preserved fossils and tiny glass spherules called tektites. He describes how this led to a detailed picture of the dramatic events that unfolded within an hour or two following the asteroid impact.
