What an enjoyable ride! Find myself both hoping for the hero to gain the power to achieve what he is trying to achieve while at the same time loving how he grows stronger in himself as he works around his limitations.

An enjoyable ride but lacking a little edge

It’s the Bobiverse; its a fun snarky ride through the possibilities of space travel and technology- it’s not supposed to be profound or dramatic but at the same time it lacked some of the character challenge of the previous books. Please keep these books coming though!

Self-righteous and over long

It was hard to connect with the intense pro-gun culture. It just seems nuts that guns were so essential for survival in order to protect themselves from other people with guns. I get that guns are the norm in the states it’s just that this is so not normal to just about anybody who lives anywhere else.
The characters also made me cringe. Ultimately right thinking people all agreed with each other and characters who did offer some conflict had miraculous shifts in response to the right words at the right time in order to come around to complete agreement with right thinking people unless they were irredeemably foolish, cowardly or evil folk who pretty much were shot down.

Kate Mulgrew is brilliant and the story remains enjoyable every time. The TV series does not replicate the richness of what unfurls here. Maybe listen to this after you have watched the series so it doesn’t compare poorly or maybe just listening to this is all you ever need.

I had to skip the last two hours

Marnie (the protagonist) is regularly put forward as some whimsical, loving of the world, adorkable character but I found her more to be whiny, uninsightful and very self centred. I couldn’t like her. The story goes around in circles for ages and I was able to skip to the final two chapters without feeling I had missed any moment I should have put up with more of Marnie for.

A ‘Mary Sue’ in repetitive shoot-outs

Not terrible but not great. Perhaps the narrator over did it but Apostle (in his blonde haired, blue eyed glory) was just too good to be interesting and it became a bit repetitious. I skipped a whole section and didn’t feel like I had missed 3 hours of plot line.

Just finished listening to this again because my daughter is now finally old enough to listen and the other stories I am following pale in comparison. One of the best series you will ever hear.

One of the best books I have listened to this year!

This production transported me. I hope a movie gets made of this but at the same time I don’t care because it has already played out in glorious detail in my head. Excellent narration. Characters I cared about. Science that made my nerdy neurones buzz contentedly.

More action, less angst

I really enjoyed Fangirl and the Carry On excerpts but I found myself unable to really like anyone in this story and no one seemed to be having much fun. I skipped to the end and still didn't find anyone particularly happy. I didn't enjoy Harry Potter when he was whiny and I didn't enjoy a whiny Simon either.

Perfect conclusion
