Historia
Sally Milz is a sketch writer for The Night Owls, a late-night live comedy show that airs every Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she’s long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life. But when Sally’s friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show.

Loved it!
Revisado: 04-18-25
This was a great, non-cringey, rom-comish book. Read it if you love SNL. Or read it if you just love stories about people connecting and people overcoming their insecurities. My first five star read in a long time!

Historia
Hazel Hart was a successful romance novelist until a breakup drives her straight into writer’s block. Having failed (and failed some more) to deliver her new manuscript, she’s hiding from the world behind a wall of old takeout containers until her publisher lays down the law. If she misses her next deadline it’s The End. Desperate for inspiration, Hazel impulse-buys a historic home online and flees Manhattan to tiny Story Lake, PA. Upon her dramatic arrival—involving an incident with a bald eagle—she discovers the charm of her new home may have been slightly exaggerated.

Revisado: 04-13-25
This was a cute story… Maybe even a little too cute. It kept me interested, but overall I thought it was just OK.

Read this if you like feeling despondent
Revisado: 03-28-25
Read this if you like feeling despondent. This book was bleak and depressing. Towards the end, I had a glimmer that it might end on a hopeful note. I was mistaken.

So well written!
Revisado: 03-13-25
This memoir was fantastic. Ione didn’t try to gloss over her life. She shared wonderful, poignant, memories; but was candid about mistakes she made, and how she grew from them. I would recommend this book to anyone, but it’s especially nostalgic and resonant for a GenX-er.

Cece is in love. She has arrived early at her in-laws’ beautiful lake house in Salish, Montana, to finish planning her wedding to Charlie, a medical student with a brilliant future. Charlie asks Garrett, his best friend from college, to officiate, though Cece can’t imagine anyone less appropriate for the task; Garrett doesn’t believe in love, much less marriage. But as she spends time with Garrett, and his gruff mask slips, her long-held expectations for her life with Charlie begin to crumble, her feelings for Garrett—haunted by a tragic event from his past—become impossible to bury.

depressing for the sake of being depressing
Revisado: 03-08-25
It’s hard to truly capture how much I disliked this book. It’s a bunch of characters with zero self awareness treating each other poorly through the courses of their lifetimes. Oh yeah, and the planet is dying. It’s depressing for the sake of being depressing. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because the quality of the writing was good, but otherwise it was a total miss for me.

This was my first 5 star read of the year. I absolutely loved the characters, including the giraffes! It reminded me of Water for Elephants, but with more historical elements woven in.

Martian meets Handmaid’s Tale
Revisado: 02-06-25
In different ways this book reminded me of The Martian and Handmaid’s Tale, but was nothing like either LOL. It was a very well written character study. There wasn’t a lot of closure, but that oddly didn’t bother me. I have a feeling I will be thinking about this book for a long time.

3.5 stars. It was a pretty good story with some interesting plot twists. I found the “love” story a bit cringey.

No matter what the world throws her way, at least Ruthie Beamish has the house. Lovingly renovated, located by the sea in a quiet Long Island village, the house is her nest egg - the retirement account shared with her ex-husband, Mike, and the college fund for their teenage daughter, Jem. The catch? To afford the house, Ruthie must let it go during the best part of the year. It's Memorial Day weekend, and Ruthie has packed up their belongings for what Jem calls "the summer bummer": the family's annual exodus to make way for renters.

It was ok. 2.5 stars
Revisado: 01-16-25
This book was just OK for me. The narrator was great, but the story was just fair. There were too many side characters, and the author left a lot unresolved at the end.
